Is YouTube Music The Spotify Killer?

Posted at May 22nd, 2018 | by Sidhantha Jain | in Grapevine

In a move to shake things up in the world of music streaming services, Google is aiming to make waves with YouTube Music. The which was originally unveiled in October 2015 for users who primarily consume music through YouTube and re-released on May 17, 2018.

But why is there a need for YouTube Music when you’ve got Google Play Music? Let’s find out.

What is YouTube Music?

While YouTube Premium is simply YouTube Red with some tweaks here and there, YouTube Music is a simple streaming service supported by Google’s AI-powered search and discovery. Similar to Spotify, it works along the same lines as the Freemium model where you can enjoy the services with regular interruptions by advertisements and for $9.99 you can get unlimited ad-free music streaming.

The mobile app has been redesigned a new desktop player has been released and a browser edition is also expected soon.

Do you need YouTube Music?

If you’re using Google Play Music, you need to understand; the two have different libraries.

YouTube Music offers published tracks as well as covers, remixes, and music from artists not backed by a record label. That’s something that sets it apart from Spotify or Saavn. Plus, the music catalog on YouTube is bigger than any contender currently in the market.

Everyone’s favorite feature on Spotify is its ability to learn and recommend content on the basis of previous listening habits. Google’s artificial intelligence might outdo its Swedish competitor as it is capable of searching for particular lyrics and even use natural language.

Can you download YouTube Music currently?

Google released an early access programme in the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico on May 22.

In the coming weeks, the suit is supposed to be followed in countries like Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

However, India doesn’t seem to be on the cards as of now but we sincerely hope YouTube Music debuts before Spotify legally comes to the country.

Is YouTube Music better than other platforms?

Nothing concrete can be said without actually trying it out but genuinely we doubt it being better than everything out there.

In our opinion, anyone who goes to YouTube to listen to music is because it’s free. A few ads aren’t a deal breaker considering you never had to pay money to access content and in a price sensitive market like India, a majority of users are going to be non-subscribers.

Also, not a large percentage of the population is worried about accessing exclusive content over Saavn or Apple Music. We don’t have numbers to prove but even you know, that’s true though!

Is YouTube music for you?

Well, if you aren’t using Spotify illegally and are unhappy with local music catalogs but love to discover music using YouTube by using a third-party application which can help you play videos in the background, rip mp3 files etc. then yes, it is definitely for you, keeping in mind that you won’t be spending money on it.

Coming to producers and artists; YouTubers never made a fortune out of paid subscriptions. In fact, creators struck gold with advertisements. It’ll be interesting to see how musicians can monetize on Google’s latest product.

All in all, even if YouTube Music can’t beat Spotify at its game, it can help Google collect consumer data about their music trends and improve its advertisements, it’s a win-win situation for Google!
