Top Ten Metal Covers you must listen to

Posted at May 22nd, 2015 | by PulkitTaneja | in

For any musician, the first step towards making kick-ass original music is covering songs of the artists that inspire them. It may be hard to believe, but even the biggest metal bands in the world started off their journey by covering songs of their idols.
While some bands pull covers off effortlessly (shout-out to Metallica), some end up destroying the purity of the original compilation. Whatever the case may be, it is always exciting to listen to a different rendition of your favorite track by another band. For this reason precisely, I have taken the liberty of compiling a list of metal cover songs by metal bands which you may not know of (songs like Sweet Dreams by Marilyn Manson do not qualify since the original track is not metal). Also, I have restricted my list to one cover song per cover artist. Enjoy.
1. Motorhead – Enter Sandman (Metallica)

This is one of those rare times when an iconic band covers an iconic song by another iconic band and makes it mainstream. Lemmy singing to James’ vocal line? *ears exploding with joy*
2. Sepultura – Orgasmatron (Motorhead)

Sepultura has made this song their own by adding their signature heavy guitar tone and angry vocal style of Max Cavalera taking this 1991 cover to a whole new level.
3. Cradle of Filth – Hallowed be thy Name (Iron Maiden)

There is no band in this world that can do justice to any Maiden song if they try to directly copy their style. Hence, the enormous difference in musical styles of COF & Maiden makes this version of Hallowed be thy Name totally worthwhile. And scary. (try walking alone on a dark street with this song blasting at full volume in your headset)
4. Killswitch Engage – Holy Diver (Dio)

In probably one of the most well-known covers on this list, Killswitch Engage completely pulls off this iconic track by the Late Ronnie James Dio by adding their own melodic style to it.
5. Whitechapel – Strength Beyond Strength (Pantera)

From one Phil (Anselmo) to the other (Bozeman), the pure genius of this cover is how Whitechapel adapts the slow-to-fast transitions of Pantera to produce a breakdown laden treat. Prepare for some eargasms after 1:10.
6. Gojira – Escape (Metallica)

Through this cover, Gojira pays homage to one of their idols in Metallica. This song is what the lovechild of Gojira and Metallica would sound like.
7. Death – Painkiller (Judas Priest)

Painkiller is one of those songs that makes you want to mosh your heart out. The extremely fast paced drumming & guitars with Rob Halford’s vocals can make you cry. Just replace Halford’s melodic screams with the actual ones of Chuck Schuldiner and you get this brilliant cover.
8. Metallica – Overkill (Motorhead)

Remember the whole thing about iconic songs by iconic bands being covered by other iconic bands? Yes, that. Also, I’m not undermining the sheer awesomeness of any of the other Metallica covers. There can be a top 10 list with just their compositions.
9. Type O Negative – Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath)

It is impossible not to include a Black Sabbath cover in this list. They are hands down the most covered band of all time. Choosing Type O Negative’s version of Black Sabbath is pretty straightforward. The lyrics have been changed to present the song from Satan’s perspective making it one of those few covers that are not exact lyrical and musical copies of the original.

10. Sabaton – Twilight of the Thunder God (Amon Amarth)

Joakim Broden’s unique, heavy vocal style is the perfect add-on to the Viking theme of Amon Amarth’s lyrics. This song is a dream come true for any heavy metal fan who follows Sabaton & Amon Amarth.
