Top Five solo Skrillex songs

Posted at October 2nd, 2015 | by Sidhantha Jain | in

Skrillex is arguably one of the best selling artists and most celebrated dubstep acts in the dance community right now. Today, we count down five of his most successful tracks up till now.

Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites

This probably is the first track that exposed most of the current Skrillex fans to the world of Dubstep.  Named after his second EP released in 2010, the song is primarily built of fierce electro elements, intense drum work and heavy drops with “YES OH MY GOD” vocals scattered around.

It is by far one of his most commercially and critically successful tracks. Debuting high on the Billboard charts and it was certified Double Platinum with its sales exceeding 2,000,000 (2013) units in the USA alone!

It was included in the movie ‘Spring Breakers’, an ad for GoPro, and also the video games ‘MLB 2K12’ and ‘Ridge Racer Unbounded!’ The four-minute listen, helped him earn his first Grammy in 2012 for the Best Dance Recording!

Bangarang

The fan favourite EP ‘Bangarang’ contained hits like ‘Devil’s Den’ and ‘Right on Time,’ featuring members of the Doors. But it’s the title track that took away the limelight. It was different than his typical beat; with right amount of bass, a melodious tune, electro-rock elements and Sirah’s vocals that got stuck in the mind of its listeners.

The official video has more than three hundred thirty six million views and the song has been featured in the trailers for the motion picture, ‘The Watch,’ the video game ‘Sonic Boom’ and ‘Guitar Hero Live,’ and in promos for the 2013 X Games!

‘Rolling Stone’ named it the 22nd-best song of 2012, and as of January 2013, 1 million copies have sold been in the USA.

First Of The Year (Equinox)

Skrillex is widely recognised for the following lyrics

“Aeg eh euf, gyaaaa uh ah uh, gyuh nyi nao seddedum

Aeg eh euf, gyah, ah, yef, giaoaioseoiiiiinaaiio –

CALL 911 NOW!

BWUY YOH

GWEEEH nyen nyun nyon, GWEEEH nyen nyun nyon”

Off his track, ‘First of the Year (Equinox),’ which got itself enlisted in 2011’s commercially successful tracks. But it more commonly, came to be known for its music video, which was nominated for ‘Best Short Form Music Video’ at the 54th Grammy Awards, unfortunately it didn’t win. However, it won the award for ‘Best Visual Effects in a Video’ at 2012 MTV Video Music Awards! It also saw itself in a “Werewolves of Highland,” and “Beavis and Butt-head” episode.

Rock ‘n Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain)

The second single from ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ EP, was “Rock n’ Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain)” which helped him gain massive airplays and mainstream support on the dance floor.

Being a pure-dubstep track it shut up his underground haters who thought he’s “sold out.”It served as a perfect example of the crude style that transitioned with Skrillex from his days with his post-hardcore band ‘From First to Last.’ Even though, it didn’t make much chaos on the music charts, it became his ‘ace of spades’ track in every live set of his and clarifying, his music is more than just “noise.”

Make It Bun Dem

Falling in the genre category of “Reggaestep,” the song started out as an instrumental mix with no name, and was only heard live. Fans dubbed it as “Rudeboy Bass”, since it uses the sample “Rudeboy bass, mash up the place!” Damian offered to re-record it, replacing the previous set of vocals added as an experiment by Sonny from Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock.”  The final version of “Make It Bun Dem” was used in the video game ‘Far Cry 3,’ looped during “Kick the Hornet’s Nest”, a mission where the player is destined to destroy five marijuana fields (Bob, S-A-D).  The track certified Gold in USA with more than 500,000 singles sold and reached the number one spot on the ‘US Reggae Digital Songs (Billboard)’ chart!  Some of the remixes that helped it attain further radio appearances were from Alvin Risk, David Heartbreak and Brodinski just to name a few.
