Seven Intriguing Naked Festivals Around The World

Posted at August 25th, 2015 | by Supreet.cheema | in Entertainment, Music Festivals, World Festivals

Why do people from the world go topless or naked? Are they part of a ‘Crazy Revolution’ or are they trying to pass a message. After all, being naked is embracing the spirit of nature the way she intended it to be, feeling the unfiltered sunlight and air on your body, breathing and celebrating the fact of being alive without being controlled by the laws imposed by the society.

Even though it is not celebrated in India, Go Topless Day passes a strong message of gender equality encouraging women (and men) to bare their upper bodies in order to protest hypocritical laws that force women to cover their breasts while allowing men to walk around with no shirts. GoTopless Day always falls at the Sunday closest to Women’s Equality Day, Aug 26. Take a look at the top 7 naked-themed festivals around the world!

Burning Man – Nevada

Held once a year in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada, Burning Man is a week-long event dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. It isn’t your usual music festival and has the power to change your perspective in more than one way.

Running of the Nudes – Pamplona, Spain

The “Running of the Nudes” is held 2 days prior to the start of the 9-day festival of San Fermin and the world-famous Running of the Bulls. The event was established in 2002 as a protest to the Running of the Bulls as the bulls in this run would be killed in the bullring later that same evening.

Kumbh Mela – India

Considered to be the world’s biggest gathering, Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. A large group of nude Sadhus smeared in ash make their way in a joyful procession. The festival is held every 3 years and rotates locations – Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik, Ujjain and Haridwar.

Hadaka Matsuri – Japan

Japan is popular for hosting many naked festivals aka ‘Hadaka Matsuris’ in many cities but the most famous one occurs in Okayama, where the festival originated. On the third Saturday of every February, thousands of men either completely naked or wearing loincloths gather at the Saidai-ji Temple in Saidaiji-naka.

World Bodypainting Festival – Austria

Created on a whim in 1998 by Alex Barendregt, World Bodypainting Festival draws thousands of participants, spectators and bodypaint artists from around the world. Originally held in Seebodenm, now the event has been shifted to Poertschach in south-central Austria.

World Naked Bike Ride

World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is an international clothing-optional bike ride in which participants plan, meet and ride together to put a stop to the indecent exposure of people and the planet to cars and the pollution they create. The WNBR takes place in a number of cities throughout the world.

Fremont Solstice Parade

Begun in 1989 by Barbara Luecke and Peter Toms, the parade kicks off the Fremont fair and attracts tens of thousands of spectators, many of them curious to get a peek at the Painted Naked Cyclists . It is a non-political, artistic, clothing-optional bike ride that has unofficially started the parade since 1992.
