Things you probably didn't know about Skrillex

Posted at October 5th, 2015 | by Sidhantha Jain | in

Skrillex is a name officially synonymous to the phrase “drop the bass.” It comes as no surprise that he has won 6 Grammy awards and is a mainstay in the list of highest paid EDM acts in the industry! Even though most of us brag about his tracks on our iPods, we can’t agree to disagree; we don’t know him as good as his beat!

Continue reading to get an insight into the world of the man responsible for bringing us one step closer to non-stop eargasms!

Starting with the basics:

1. The dub-god as we know today was named Sonny John Moore at birth. “Skrilly” and “Skril” were the nicknames his high school buddies gave him. As it turns out; he added the “ex” and adopted it as his DJ identity! Although the name has no real meaning, there was no alteration made later as he ran into the same situation as Diplo; where his brand got too popular and there was no turning back!  By the way, “Skrillex” wasn’t his first moniker, he was also known as “Twipz” subject to his original MySpace web page.

2. Skrillex teamed up with Bob Marley’s son, Damian Marley and released “Make It Bun Dem,” which first made rounds online dubbed as “Rudeboy Bass” by his fans. Eventually, he ended up putting the acapella of Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock” over it. But instead of releasing the work as a remix of “Welcome to Jamrock,” Jr. Gong recorded new vocals and released it as a new track on OWSLA in 2012.

3. Red Bull worked on a Skrill-centred documentary titled “Let’s Make a Spaceship,” giving us an access to his tour preparations and how his crew built the stage show which took momentum in 2014 from Utah. The short movie aired at the ACL Festival immediately after he played his set, which also showcases his skills working on light boards and light shows!

You knew all this, right? What about them facts:

4. Being a huge fan of the band “First to Last” in the mid-2000s, Skrillex volunteered his services when he heard that the band was in need of a guitarist. Somehow, things didn’t turn out to be as planned and he ended up becoming their lead vocalist! After staying with the group for three years, he quit due to ‘vocal chord problems’ and decided to pursue a solo career in 2007.

5. After making celebs like comedian Rowan Atkinson aka Mr. Bean, actor Eddie Murphy and Sir Paul McCartney (just to name a few), victim of online death hoaxes, an article with respect to Sonny’s death was published talking about a freak yachting accident in Bermuda! ‘RIPskrillex’ became trending on Twitter and a Facebook page ‘R.I.P. Skrillex’ attracted nearly one million ‘likes’ as the rumours went viral.

6. It is almost believable that the other half of the world recognises him ‘cause of unique hairstyle and big glasses! His hair is so popular, it led to a song called ‘Girl, You Got Skrillex Hair’ written by the band, Electric Valentine. The 27 year old has inspired a whole generation of fans along with celebrities like Rihanna and Ellie Goulding to shave half of their heads contributing to wide-spread usage of the term “Skrillex-hair.”

Hilariously, “it” had its own Twitter account. Unfortunately the account is inactive since 2012, but whatever tweets were posted made it a very entertaining read!

Fun Fact (Not so fun though): His hair caught fire on his birthday last year at his birthday party!

7.  Who doesn’t know him? Apparently, the members of the band ‘The Doors’ didn’t know about his existence until they both collaborated on a track by the name of, “Break’n A Sweat,” which ended up on the Bangarang EP. Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger mentioned that their kids were big-time Skrillex fans, and were excited that their fathers were working together with their new ‘favourite’ artist!

8.  According to the ‘Kill Everybody’ producer’s Wikipedia page, his first official EP was called ‘My Name Is Skrillex.’ But did you know, the first album that he ever bought were Marilyn Manson’s ‘Antichrist Superstar’ and Nine Inch Nails ‘’Broken’ EP?

Didn’t know the last one? Guess, we’re slowing entering the uncharted territory!

Let us inch towards his personal life:

9.  The ‘Reptile’ has gone on record saying that Warp Records, home to “intelligent dance music” veterans like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, was the label he got into at age of 12, and considers this event his “musical turning point.”

10. Before heading back to northeast Los Angeles he was home schooled as he was severely bullied at his arts academy, where he was enrolled at the age of 12. His parents decided it would be better for his mental health to concentrate on his education while stay-at-home!

11.  At the age of 16, he learnt that he was adopted! While Sonny avoids being vocal about this subject, he has admitted that his biological mother is a friend of his adopted family. Since all this was kept hidden for so long, Skrillex hasn’t spoken to his birth mother in years. *sob*
