Rudimental - Not Just Another Band

Posted at June 18th, 2015 | by Benazir Khan | in

They’re in India and there is more than a buzz of what’s in store and how fans and introductory audience look forward to their performance in the country. With the flurry of international talent setting foot in India by each passing day, it is of absolutely no surprise that Rudimental decided on coming down to the nirvana land themselves.

Playing drums and bass with a unique style of their own, Rudimental stands out for its natural rhythms and quiet intonation in solitude. With the music picking up with some beats, in a wonderfully structured pattern, you will recall the same with an echo soon after its gone! The interesting part about their music which also interestingly defines their personality as a band and further spills over to their music is the mix between the contemporary and the classic.

The UK based band believes in a combination of the individual performance with instruments fused with electronic beats for both pick up and drown down effects. A community centric band Rudimental is as old school, and just as evolved – therefore beyond the modern day understanding of “contemporary.” Music forward is more their thing. This gives an interesting insight into their characters as people, as band members, their views on music, the works and ultimately life. Which is why you see them happy in their indulgence with just playing and making good music on the go and not being interested in mainstream video features as is the convention these days.

Having started off as a two member band from its origins – with Kesi Dryden and Piers Agget, today the band is a 4 member strong team, with the significant inclusions of Leon Rolle (DJ Locksmith) and Amir Amor. Interestingly they play as a 4 member team for their studio projects, wherefrom brilliant bass and banger compilations emerge. But when they are out performing, they rope in trumpet players, bass bangers, vocalists and anyone they see as good raw talent to pump up more energy on stage as well as to give lesser known artists a way to show their work or simply enjoy the experience of collaborating and creating some delightful music together! John Newman (whom they bumped into at a bar) and Emile Sande are the point in case here.

Strung with golden hearts, they believe in doing as much for the hubbubs of where they grew up and started out from. So playing for the community kids or coming up with innovative ways to engage the kids with and through music, especially around the East London side is an activity they quite like to engage in from time to time. The fun part is when this turns out to be a scout for raw talent as well for them. Seems like going with the flow assumes an all new level and meaning with these guys. A lot of the times some of these talented community kids are picked up to either play, hone their skills or simply feature in their videos, while the band stays aloof from the visual aspects of their music themselves.

Music wise and naturally inclined towards finer tunes, what essentially makes Rudimental click, lies in its very name. The band believes in harmonically fine tuning rhythms out of the base instruments they play best. Mustering the same with drums and beats, both with low ranges and the higher ones, they create a fusion of sorts with trumpets and anything under the sun which adds to the rhythm making process. Music then just flows out of the lacing effect of some interesting EDM graphs and tunes. This openness to try out, go out there and experiment with anything and everything under the sun, simply makes the band stand out.

Here’s to a very unique band with even more equivocal and sensuous music. With their India Tour kick-starting tomorrow, one can’t wait to enjoy the ultimate feeling of blown away!
