20+ Restaurants & Bars Shut Down In Hauz Khas Village

On the orders of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, around 21 establishments were shut down in Hauz Khas Village on Saturday, 23rd September. According to authorities, they were sealed due to lack of licenses or not following the waste norms. The steps have been taken to ensure quality of food produced for the unsuspecting customers. Under the Air & Water Act for Restaurants, waste and discharge needs to be treated properly and the kitchens have to have a certain sanitation and hygiene standard.

SDM Hauz Khas, Ramchandra Shingare, who supervised the sealing exercise, said, “Adequate security arrangement was made for the sealing exercise. No law and order problem was created during the sealing exercise which began in the morning and was concluded towards the evening. Together 21 restaurants were sealed.”

According to officials the exercise didn’t come as a surprise to the restaurant owners, as they’d been routinely served notices over the course of the past few months, to correct whatever was lacking in their establishment. According to restaurant owners however, this came as a total shock, and some had apparently never received any formal notices and were even following all the rules and regulations.

“Any eatery or restaurant found to be violating the air and water pollution norms will be flagged off by us. We had sent notices to several such eateries earlier as they were not following the prescribed norms and waste disposal practices. Action was then taken against these eateries and more are under the scanner,” said a senior DPCC official. Accordingly, restaurants will be regularly checked to ensure they are adhering to the norms and are not units of pollution.

This has been a long-standing issue between the government authorities and restaurant owners, but while it’s being sorted 700 staff at different levels of management have directly or indirectly lost their jobs.

“If I would have received a show cause notice, I would have certainly appeared before the court. On Saturday, when I saw my entire staff standing outside, and some of them crying, I too had tears in my eyes. I have the required licenses, valid till 2020. How can anyone say I don’t have license?” says Prashant Karan, owner of The Frat House.
