Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood to release his India-Inspired album 'JUNUN' this November

After working together on the movies There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice, director Paul Thomas Anderson and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood have come together for a very different project. It all started at the annual World Sufi Spirit Festival in Rajasthan, India last year. The festival was graced with the presence of Radiohead’s lead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood. Though the rest of the band was missed, the disappointment soon disappeared after a memorable folk-dominated performance by Greenwood alongside Shye Ben Tzur, an acclaimed Israeli guitarist, and The Rajasthan Express,  a group of Indian qawwali musicians.

Building up on this success, Jonny decided to record an entire album named ‘Junun’ with same collaborators . He asked Paul Thomas Anderson to document the recording process with all 17 of the musicians involved in the project in Rajasthan itself where they were hosted by the Maharaja of Jodhpur at Mehrangarh Fort. Paul obliged and delivered a stunning 54 minute long moving portrait using digital video over his generally preferred 35mm format and also Drone rigs that swoop around the streets of Rajasthan capturing visuals from a unique perspective.

Details about the project were kept hush-hush with a very low key premiere at the New York Film Festival and public launch on an almost unknown streaming platform called MUBI on October 9th. The resulting album releases on November 13th via Nonesuch Records.  Paul is known for giving a lot of importance to music in his films so this seemed like a perfect match and a lot of preliminary reviews reveal great promise though it lacks the hype and media coverage that his other movies like Inherent Vice received. Nonetheless this project is a collective effort of two artists, masters in their own fields, so what could possibly go wrong?
