“Like some wines our love could neither mature nor travel.” ― Graham Greene, The Comedians
If you’ve read any of my previous ‘Top 10 EDM Tracks about…’ posts, you might have come across a backdrop/story before you actually came to the main content. To be completely honest, all of them are inspired by some or the other event that has already occurred in my life.
This list too has its roots dug deep into my “Get over her” phase after I broke up with my long time girlfriend last year. It obviously was difficult for both of us to move on, no matter what people say. Anyhow, today we’ve reached a point where we’re over each other, pretty happy with our lives and how things have turned out. Also, aware of the fact that something indescribable happened between the two of us which cannot be replicated in the future.
One thing that has been my constant companion throughout my highs and lows is, Electronic Dance Music!
Songs have an inbuilt capability of describing exactly what we are feeling or going through. Sometimes, just singing along or dancing like nobody’s watching can certainly make us feel better (been there, done that)!
If you are going through a difficult phase just put on these songs that highlight the good, the bad, and the ugly feels. They’ve comforted me, might as well be of some help to you too? Here’s the top ten list that I came up with, and why.
Who doesn’t want to save a relationship, winding up over a stupid fight? Who doesn’t want to stop their better half from going away? Who doesn’t want to make amendments? Afterall, “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone” and you understand that. The track begins with calm vocals delivered by Ellie Goulding in her heavenly voice complimented with a minimal electro synth. As she reaches the chorus the track bursts into a typical Seven Lions track with an earth shattering might! We all have had that post-breakup moment when we want him/her to stay forgetting whatever wrong has happened.
This song is perfect to listen, if you were the person to lie or to cheat in your last relationship. The lyrics,
“Baby I don’t know what else to say
And maybe I should say I’m sorry I am,
For all the things I did today
That made you feel so empty hearted ” are about breaking someone’s trust and leaving them heartbroken over a petty decision made in haste. Well, it’s not easy to admit your intentional or even unintentional mistakes and apologise for the same. Agreed, that a ‘sorry’ wouldn’t bring about a drastic change in the other person’s life, but would bail you out from the future guilt-trip you might have. It might even save a sinking relationship, you never know!
This intense dubstep coated with a dark electro beat from Example, is for you to listen, if you were the one who called it off! Ending a relationship can be just as hard as being on the receiving end. The vocals here are about being strong and ending a bad relationship even though you don’t necessarily want it to end.
“I’ve never been afraid of the wildest fights
Not afraid of dying
But now I want off this ride ’cause you’re scaring me and I don’t like where we’re going
I need a new fun fair ’cause you’re scaring me and I don’t like where we’re going”
At least the peppy house synths will bring about a smile on your face.
P.S. it is an ideal track for anyone who’s fed up with casual relationships and the heart-hurting emotional games.
We know that you were the nice guy, didn’t mistreat her or hurt her even once. But for some apparent reason, you two just couldn’t work it out and now that she’s gone, you miss her. The simple lyrics of the song sum up your feelings of wanting to be with your ex.
“All I ever wanted was to see you smiling,
all I ever wanted was to make you mine.
I know that I love you,
oh baby why don’t you see that all I ever wanted was you and me.”
This Basshunter track wholly embodies the feelings of all of the things that are left unsaid when you split. It’s fine, you’ll be okay brother! There’s plenty of fish in the sea and there’s definitely one, who’d value you like you deserve to be!
We’ve all fallen for heartbreakers, but that’s nature’s way of telling “You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your handsome prince!” Being in a relationship, looking for a reason to stay and finding nothing except a false sense of security is the worst that can happen to anyone. The song is about the desperate feeling you get when you find out you were in love with the lies someone had created about themselves and when you discover the truth, you end up not liking what you see and lose all hope, isolating yourself from the world. Buy hey girl, probably the failed relationship was worth it, because it taught you a valuable lesson. This ain’t the end of the world, you will feel again, for someone whose heartbeat syncs with yours. You just have to wait and give love another chance!
This track marks Priyanka Chopra’s debut in the dance music world and boy, what a piece of splendid job she’s done teaming up with the ‘Selfie’ duo! The song talks about moving over your ex “soulmate” who keeps on popping up randomly and just won’t quit talking to you! I think we have all felt this way the first time an ex tries to contact us after the breakup.
“I see you calling, I don’t respond
And now I feel like I am right where I belong
And I am ready for a change
The essence of the track lies with the ability and the willingness to embrace the change and dealing with life by dancing through the pain, showing ‘em what they’re missing!
The beginning crawls as Greta Svabo Bech’s ghostly vocals accentuated by beautiful piano work, make progress which then picks up to convert itself into a detailed house rhythm. When you’re halfway through the song, deadmau5 drops an unexpected and thrilling dubstep beat that no one expects the first time they listen to the track!
“Dropping your bombs now
On all we’ve built,
How does it feel now
To watch it burn, burn, burn?”
The lyrics are basically a metaphor to express the feeling of being taken advantage of and a sequence of taunts meant for her previous lover.
Lying to yourself about how you feel is as futile as empty promises. She left you for a popular stud? Let her be!
Maybe she’ll end up buying an expensive piece of jewellery on her ring finger but she’ll never manage to get a gem of a person like you. Most likely she doesn’t even deserve you! Your sleepless nights, excessive drinking won’t help the cause, it would just add to the misery. In fact your inappropriate Facebook posts, indirect WhatsApp statuses and “Love Hurts” display picture would do no good either. Rather it would make you weaker as you make efforts to forget her. All you have to do it is, be a good a person you are and continue to stand for what believe in.
“If you run
You’ll be on the run forever
I will haunt your mind forever
You are nothing without me”
At the end, she’ll have a realisation, a materialistic approach leads to a short term joy but it would be too late as by then you’ll be with someone who notices your kindness and not quantify your bank account.
None of listed tracks evoke the emotions of a bad break up, better than this one. After listening to it you might want to ask yourself, “Why did she leave me?” But before you get to the flashback and tears are about to roll down, the bass wobbles and a tribal kinda beat catches up! The emotion behind the track is bittersweet. Umm, it’s a little more on bitter side though. When the song hits the two-minute mark, suddenly the beat drops and Justin’s serene voice returns followed by Jack U’s complex tune!
“I gave you attention when nobody else was payin’
I gave you the shirt off my back what you sayin’
To keep you warm
I showed you the game everybody else was playin’, that’s for sure
And I was on my knees when nobody else was prayin’, oh lord”
The song is about feeling like you have nothing left after giving everything to the person who broke your heart.
Not all breakups are a result of bad decisions or wrong choices, some are due to unavoidable reasons which are bound to bring two people closer overtime. Moving to another city or even a different continent for the time being might cause some tensions and lead to an eventual end of the relationship but deep down you’re the only motivation which keeps your significant half going for more, for a better future, a better future together as one.
“You’re a half a world away
But in my mind I whisper every single word you say.
And before you sleep at night
You pray to me, your lucky star, your singing satellite.”
The lyrics are in an indirect relation to the hard situations as one goes through surviving in a mature relationship. The song deals with how physical distances don’t count when the feelings are pure.
