Political Conflict In Maharashtra To Postpone Coldplay's Mumbai Gig?

Posted at November 4th, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

A new rise in political strife in Maharashtra is being led by The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). They’re demanding that the Global Citizen Festival, which is scheduled to be on the 19th of November, be postponed as it apparently violates election code of conduct. The NCP believes that the BJP government is providing concessions for the concert to win votes for next year’s BMC polls.

A letter has been submitted to the State Election Commission (SEC). “The Maharasthra government has invested in the event [organised by Global Citizen India]. The MMRDA headed by the chief minister Fadnavis has given a concession of 75% in fare to the organisers for the ground at BKC. The government has also given tax exemption to the show. The tax exemption was given when the code of conduct was in force,” said Sanjay Nirupam, Mumbai chief of Congress. “Or else, no political leader should be allowed to deliver speech from the stage where the performance of the band is being held,” he said.

The state election commissioner has assured that Nirupam‘s request will be given consideration. “In the Shiv Sena-led government in 1995-99, Michael Jackson’s concert was organised in the name of employment generation and now the BJP-led government is doing the same, ”NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said.
