Origins Of 8 Iconic Names Of Dance Music Artists

Most DJ’s and Musicians go by catchy stage names to be memorable. Ever wondered how they picked them? There are some really interesting stories behind these world famous monikers.

Swedish House Mafia

The now broken up trio, once included Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello, hadn’t decided a name for themselves till Pete Tong jokingly called them the ‘Swedish House Mafia‘. They’ve been hinting at a reunion now.

“When we would bring people to Sweden to DJ with us, they’d ask, ‘So what are you guys, some kind of house mafia?'” Angello told EDMBiz. “We didn’t use the name. Then one day Pete Tong heard about that story and said, ‘I’ve heard you’re the Swedish House Mafia.’ And we were like, OK, whatever.”

Skrillex & OWSLA

Sonny Moore a.k.a Skrillex, said the name doesn’t hold any meaning, it’s just an old screen name. His record label OWSLA however is a reference to Richard Adams’ fantasy book Watership Down. The book is about a group of rabbits living in Sandleford warren with a military castle called owsla. Check out OWSLA’s latest playlist.

Lorin Ashton was chilling at a beach in Santa Cruz with a few hundred friends and after raging all night, he noticed another soundsystem of people some way down the beach. That led to him meeting a guy who called himself ‘Brother’ who was part of a group called Spaceship Gaia, and gave him a handmade sticker that said Butterfly Beings Drink Bass Nectar‘. When he saw it, he decided that if he ever made another band he would call it Bassnectar.

Diplo is short for Diplodocus which is a genus of a Dinosaur. It’s Thomas Pentz‘ original DJ alias and is inspired by his childhood love for dinosaurs. He even has a diplodocus outline tattoo on his right arm. Diplo recently shared a really interesting story about his tryst with India 15 years ago.

Above & Beyond

They are an english progressive – trance trio and three of them had gotten together to make a remix of Chakra’s ‘Home’. It was a crazy mix, and before sending it off to Warner’s, Tony McGuinness wanted to come up with a name for it. Looking around Jono’s studio he spotted a motivational guru’s poster which said ‘Above & Beyond‘ and decided to call the mix that, which eventually became their name too. Check out the best moments from the recent Above & Beyond Tour.

Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll acquired the pet name Kygo, a mix of the first two letters of his two names, in school. It was a learning program at school and they were all given usernames, and his stuck on. He’s now throwing his very own Cloud Nine Festival in a castle.

Amber Giles was affectionally called Mija by a now ex-boyfriend. He wasn’t Mexican and didn’t speak Spanish but it was an ongoing joke between them. While she was playing with Skrillex at Bonnaroo, she decided to adopt the name onstage. Her boyfriend cheated on her while she was at the festival, but instead of changing her name, she decided to keep it and conquer the world. Check out her bold and gorgeous shoot for Playboy.

Tim Bergling was making a MySpace profile and his name was already taken. So he decided to go with Avicii which means the lowest level of Buddhist Hell. He’s recently made a special playlist on Billboard’s Guest List.
