New Bill Allows Eateries, Multiplexes, & Malls To Run 24x7 In Mumbai

Mumbai already had a pretty killer nightlife scene, and they’ve gotten another massive boost wherein eateries, malls, and multiplexes can stay open till late and even run 24/7 if they choose to do so. The establishments just require police permissions, which they can even get online, and then they’re good to go. The state government passed the Shops and Establishment (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Bill, enabling this.

As on now shop and commercial restaurants have permissions ranging from 10PM to 1:30AM, with 15 minute grace periods. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, spoke on the passing of the bill, “The permissions will be based on the areas and the locations and the police will decide on the timings based on repercussions on the law and order.”

The government also wants to make sure there are adequate security measures for women. Labour Minister Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar said, “While offering ease of doing business, we have also ensured the interests of the workers are safeguarded. We have made provisions for strict monitoring of CCTV installation and mandatory night drops for women working the night shift. Establishments that fail to follow these provisions will face strict action.”

For the Bill to be implemented it may take from three to 6 months , and a whole lot of worker rights and labour laws will have to be followed strictly. “This will not only end the inspector raj but also will generate employment. Maharashtra has become first state to adopt the Model Shop Act and this will now pave way for other states to follow the provision we incorporated,” Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar.
