What Is "Mumble Rap" & How Did This New Wave Become Such A Big Deal In 2017?

Hip-Hop is gargantuan in proportions when you start to wrap your mind around the kinds of variations there exists and has ever existed. The latest phenomenon to hit Hip-Hop and hit is hard is “Mumble Rap”. For those of y’all who don’t recognize this term, it refers to the new age of rappers who have kept their focus on polishing up their flow and melody and not as much on bars. The 20 somethings that blew up off of their SoundCloud fame and are crushing it right now.

Rappers like 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, Travis Scott and tons more are soaring through the charts and this wave has gotten so widespread come 2017 that this may just be the future of the biggest genre of our generation.

This newfound lack of lyrical dexterity but rather holding tight how articulate the production value is in terms of harmony might only be blowing up now but it has been around for quite a while. Rappers like Future & Young Thug have been bumping off this vibe for years. The old guard doesn’t seem to appreciate it as much as some of the most iconic rappers Snoop Dogg, J Cole, Eminem and others have not been very appreciative of this movement. But then comes in Kendrick Lamar who has been with it and defines this as the next evolved state of Hip-Hop.

I want hip-hop to continue to evolve. That’s why I can’t shun a lot of the artists that may not be a Kendrick Lamar. But this is what I tell them every time I see them: Be yourself and do what you do but also know who laid down the groundwork. Don’t go on your interviews and diss them and say you don’t like them and you don’t care for them. So talking down on the folks that inspired us to do this, it’d never be right. You dig what I’m saying? So at the end of the day as long as you be who you are but respect what got us here, that’s how you continue to evolve.

Whether you’ve grown into it already or not, this newfangled movement that is all about how it feels rather than how it actually is, is here to stay. These artists shouldn’t be shrugged off because their ability to bourne something new is not indicative of “shaking things up” or stepping in a different direction from “having substance” but just flexing their blue-sky thinking.
