OutKast is an American hip hop duo formed in 1992 in East Point, Georgia, composed of Atlanta-based rappers André “André 3000” Benjamin (formerly known as Dré) and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton. The duo achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, helping to popularize Southern hip hop while experimenting with diverse genres such as funk, psychedelia, jazz, and techno. And to celebrate founding member, Andre 3000’s birthday, here’s a selection of some of their best work:
  1. B.O.B. –

“B.O.B” was banned by many urban Top 40 radio stations  due to its title and the subject matter it was assumed to have. The single was named by several music publications as one of the best songs of the 2000s. Rolling Stone ranked it 21st on their “100 Best Songs of the 2000s list and 50th on their “The 50 Greatest Hip Hop Songs of All Time” list. This drum and bass heavy song signified the unique flavor of OutKast, and the charts seemed to conform to this fact.
  2. Ms. Jackson –

Ms. Jackson was released on October 17, 2000, as the second single from OutKast’s fourth album, Stankonia. It topped the US charts, and also reached number one in Germany and number two in the United Kingdom. This iconic number also won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. The music video, directed by F. Gary Gray, features animals nodding along to the song, won the BET Award for Video of the Year and MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video.
  3. The Way You Move –

“The Way You Move” is Big Boi’s smash hit released by LaFace Records. The song features OutKast mentor Sleepy Brown on guest vocals. Along with “Hey Ya!”, recorded by OutKast’s other member André 3000, “The Way You Move” is one of the two lead singles from Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, OutKast’s double album project which includes a solo album from each member. Released from Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx half of the double album, “The Way You Move” peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming OutKast’s third number-one pop single, and the 900th for “Billboard.” In 2009, it was named the 22nd most successful song of the 2000s, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade.
  4. Hey Ya! –
Hey Ya! is probably the standout track from OutKast’s stellar career and when it first dropped, it became an instant classic and crowdpleaser. The lyric “shake it like a Polaroid picture”, along with the song’s commercial success, even helped to revitalize the Polaroid Corporation! Also, featuring on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below this iconic track still is as legendary as it once was way back in 2003.
