Looking Back To The Top 5 Singles of 2015

Posted at June 17th, 2016 | by Nikhil George | in

We’re well into 2016, so let’s pause for a moment and look back at the some tracks that managed to capture everyone’s attention last year. These were the top 5 singles from 2015 according to the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Which one is your favourite?

The Hills – The Weeknd

This dark track with lyrics which refer to drugs, fame and lust managed to stay at the top of Billboard Hot 100 Charts for six weeks. The song closes with a haunting melody in Amharic, the primary language of Ethiopia and the Weeknd’s mother tongue. Billboard chooses to describe the song as ‘a beguiling, harrowing soundscape that’s impossible to forget’.

Cheerleader – OMI

Although this track was originally released way back in 2012, it started making waves only after the remix by German producer Felix Jaehn came out last year. The lyrics primarily deal with finding a ‘cheerleader’, who is ‘always there when I need her’. According to OMI, the subject matter is somewhat broader: “It speaks to more than just a significant other. It’s dedicated to anyone who is that support system.”

Hello – Adele

Topping the charts is something that Adele seems to have made a habit out of, Hello being her fourth single to top the Billboard Hot 100. As is her wont, Adele sings about a broken relationship with feelings of regret and nostalgia. Adele had this to say about the track, in an interview, “I felt all of us were moving on, and it’s not about an ex-relationship, a love relationship, it’s about my relationship with everyone that I love. It’s not that we have fallen out, we’ve all got our lives going on and I needed to write that song so they would all hear it, because I’m not in touch with them.”

See You Again (ft. Charlie Puth) – Wiz Khalifa

This track from the Furious 7 soundtrack, written in memory of Paul Walker, managed to stay at the top of the charts for 12 weeks. It is currently tied with Eminem’s Lose Yourself for being the longest-running rap number one hit. It is also the third most viewed music video of all time on YouTube. While talking about the track, Khalifa said, “I basically thought about what the movie stands for as far as family and the brotherhood, and of course, using the metaphor of the last ride and the last race because of that last scene”.

Uptown Funk (ft. Bruno Mars) – Mark Ronson

This track was undoubtedly 2015’s top single, spending an incredible 14 weeks at the top of the charts, although it was released in 2014. Mark Ronson describes Uptown Funk as “a full-on combustible groove workout with elastic bass and indomitable spirit”. The track’s quirky music video is a treat to watch, while its somewhat Micheal Jackson-esque choreography ensured that it surpassed the ‘one billion views’ mark on YouTube quite comfortably.
