K-Pop Is Becoming Massive In India & Seems To Be The Next Big Thing

Posted at September 27th, 2017 | by Yash Vikram Singh | in Entertainment, Featured, GVO Opinion

K-Pop is a fairly new genre that is not only slowly creeping up but straight up spreading like wildfire. All visible roots of K-Pop can be traced back to global sensation PSY coming up with hits like Gangnam Style and Gentleman. Almost none of the listeners actually understood what he said or meant but they enjoyed it anyway.

The world is almost over PSY, but new K-Pop acts such as BTS, Exo & Girls Generation are exploding. Not just in general all over the world but it is actually very specific to India as well. The genre came up in countries like China & Japan and eventually found it’s way to India via the North-East. Korean culture as a whole became big in North-East India and now the genre is set to takeover as a result of those foundations.

It used to be way more Hip-Hop centric before the turn of the decade but it has gravitated it’s way towards pop pursuant to it’s vibrant, easygoing music style. Some of the other reasons it’s catching on so quickly is that they’ve built electric story lines and thought-out choreography to go along with. They built their persona from the ground up and their fans are more like a cult. With them being familiar with every little thing they do; giving them names and having all-exclusive merchandise that their fans crave.

Girls Genration have been crushing it for over a decade and this is what they’ve built.

It has become quite the phenomenon in India and the only way for K-Pop to head is up. The most salient showcase of that is VH1 coming in hot with their new show-segment exclusively for K-Pop.

Watch out for Vh1 India's brand new K-pop music block: #Vh1KPoppd!Starts on 16 September at 8 PM.

K-Pop’d is just another astute example of how well the genre is doing and it is right on the cusp of really exploding in the country.
