iTunes: Under the Hammer

UK High Court just burned Apple Inc. because of their own burn function(ironical). No tareek par tareek for Apple Inc., looks like court rulings in UK are pretty fast and strict. High court’s ruled that copying music from a CD or backing it up is illegal. This makes iTunes illegal with it’s CD burning function. So now, Apple would have to drop this functionality as it is promoting an illegal activity and could face damage claims from music groups.

As a spokesperson for the UK Intellectual Property Office told Torrent Freak, “It is now unlawful to make private copies of copyright works you own, without permission from the copyright holder – this includes format shifting from one medium to another.” So converting CD-MP3 is now illegal.

If you ask a consumer the verdict is bizarre. If you legally bought digital media from iTunes, making a copy of it for personal use will be illegal. The same is true for backing up your music to an external hard drive or copying it to the cloud. So if you lost your phone or your laptop is stolen the only legal thing you can do to get back your music is to buy it again.

This saga is going legal to illegal for about a year now, but for now it is technically illegal to copy or make backup of the music you own and so is the burn function in iTunes. As it is complex law and they are considering the effects and options available for any future αctions.
So far there is no action or comments from Apple Inc. defending themselves.
