#IndieFind: Skrat

“Love’s just like snooker. So colourful but all balls.”

This is one of the many pearls of wisdom by garage rock band Skrat, consisting of a trio of talented guys from Chennai. Founders T.T. Sriram on Vocals and Guitars and Tapass Naresh on Drums, along with new addition Jhanu on the bass form Skrattheband. They got their name from an Ice Age character and have cooly managed to circumvent copyright issues like a boss! The members have switched around and they’ve taken a hiatus now and then but overall have managed to keep their music alive since over a decade.

Skrat has been in formation since 2006, but it was in 2012 that they began to craft a unique soundscape which translated into their vibrant live performances. In 2012, during a frustrating and intense jam session, they came up with the 17 minute long ‘Skrat In The Shed’ video, which put them back on the indie map. The video got a lot of appreciation and even gave the band a new sound direction to explore.

In 2013, Skrat released Bring Out The Big Guns and since then there was no looking back. They played on the Red Bull Tour Bus, got featured on MTV Indies, and released a music video for ‘Smoke A Cigar’. They gigged across the country and all-in-all 2014 was a great year for them. Before this album, there wasn’t much growth even though they had received great feedback from different cities.

Other Indian indie artists that they love are the F16’s, Scribe, and Live Banned. They’ve performed at a number of festivals like Nh7 Weekender and The New Wave Music Fest, alongside other Indie acts. Their live performances are super high energy and when frontman Sriram tells you to jump, you do it!

In November 2014, Skrat went on an adventure with their entire crew, covering 3600 kilometres with their entire Skrat crew on bikes. They made a sweet documentary on it called ‘The Loverider Experience’ and you should definitely check it out! 7 cities and 8 shows is not a small feat!

Their next LP was ‘The Queen‘ which features some amazing guitar riffs and powerful vocals. Overall it has a dance-friendly energy and groovy songs with a fun, feel-good vigour interspersed with infectious refrains. On giving advice to upcoming bands, they say, “There are no real rules except to be true to what you really want to do. Make music because you love it and keep doing it no matter what anybody tells you. Some people will like it, some people won’t. That’s why it’s special. When we were young we gave in to criticism too easily and also played to impress people. That didn’t really work out till we learnt it the hard way.”
