#IndieFind: Sandunes

Sanaya Ardeshir‘s solo project – Sandunes, is her full time electronic music experiment. The Mumbai based producer, composer, and synth player, doesn’t have the attention-seeking quality of most EDM, in fact it doesn’t exactly fall under the genre even though it’s electronic music that you can dance to. It’s got a funky, mellow twang to it, with complex and layered tunes to explore, and falls somewhere in between electronica, garage, and post-dubstep with a hint of Asian influences.

At the age of 7, Sanaya began playing classical piano, but was eventually drawn towards jazz, funk, and trip-hop music, and has since created a dazzling array of self-produced electronica which is gaining popularity everyday. ‘Sandunes’ was not her first foray into music as she played keyboards for ‘Something Relevant‘ back in 2006 which gave her a lot of experience playing live. Sanaya has even had formal training in sound engineering and music production at the Point Black College in London.

She returned to Mumbai in 2012 after finishing her degree in London and hit the ground running. She booked her first gig and opened for India’s electronic frontman Dualist Inquiry aka Sahej Bakshi. Along with solo shows, Ardeshir released a two-track EP in 2012 called titled Temper Tonic. In 2013 she got together with Bakshi and producer/ drummer Jivraj Singh to form the Dualist Inquiry Band.

Sandunes released ‘Ever Bridge‘, her debut album in September 2013 which had collaborations with the likes of Siddharth Basrur of Goddess Gagged and Uday Benegal of Indus Creed. For this independent art and music project she worked with many graphic artists and designers to showcase subjectivity and interpretive freedom within music. She also worked with 3D Mapping wizards and stage production artists like Wolves to develop unique audio-visual concepts for her countrywide tour.

Her work has been recognised by Local and International tastemakers like Border Movement, VH1 India, Wild City, Vogue, Homegrown and more, and in 2013 she was featured in Rolling Stones Magazine as an artist to watch out for. Red Bull’s ‘Bedroom Producers’ series shot a film on her creative process and other publications like Elle, Forbes, GQ, and Grazia, have also featured her work. Sandunes has played at a host of music festivals and venues including NH7 Weekender, Magnetic Fields Festival, Germany’s Fusion Festival, Pettah Interchange in Sri Lanka, Sunburn, and Enchanted Valley Carnival.

In 2015, she released her latest work called ‘Unfinish‘, which was a series of WIP tracks. She posted along with the release “Earlier this year while on tour in the US, I lost 2 of my hard drives and all of the music I had been working on for the past couple of years.

Left with unfinished low-quality mp3s that were also works-in-progress, I decided to go ahead and get the remains mastered as an ode to my hard drives (RIP wherever you are!) Perhaps losing them was a big fat blessing in disguise – I may never have found the courage to share this music otherwise!”

She’s been working with Kolkata based drummer and producer Jivraj Singh (Jiver) on their combined project called Perfectiming and they recently released their self-titled EP, comprising of 4 dynamic tracks.
