Here's Why Avicii Actually Stopped Touring

Posted at April 8th, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

It’s hardly been a week since Aviciiretired‘ but he seems to be more active than ever. He’s sold the rights to his documentary to BBC, he’s premiered a new track with Sia, and is currently doing shows. Despite all this activity though, Avicii does intend to retire from touring by the end of this year and there are a lot of reasons for it.

Life on the road can be brutal physically, mentally, and emotionally and this is true for any hardworking musician. Avicii performed 220 DJ sets in 261 weeks, and the fact that it’s almost one set a week for 4 years is an impressive feat especially since he took quite a bit of time off in 2014 due to serious health issues.During this time he also released 2 albums and 3 EP’s. In 2013 he had been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis due to alcoholism, which led to a surgery removing his gallbladder. He’s also at times worked himself to the bone, spending more than 60 hours in the studio at a time. All of this pressure combined, led him to making the decision of quitting touring. Hopefully, with this much needed rest, he’ll continue contributing to the music scene.

“I can’t say I’m never going to have a show again.”

So there is hope after all. But then a show here or there is different from a full-fledged tour. Avicii is enjoying the relief he’s getting from making his retirement announcement. “I was nervous when I made the announcement,” he says, “mainly that I would look ungrateful. But I’ve gotten so many supportive texts from friends in the industry, other DJs, other artists. The fan response has been incredible. And even the press response has been incredible. So yeah, it’s been a lot better than I expected.”

There was of course DeadMau5‘s snarky tweet about his retirement status. “Yeah, I saw that, that’s fine. It’s not my problem if he can’t quit.”

“It’s been a very crazy journey. I started producing when I was 16. I started touring when I was 18. From that point on, I just jumped into 100 percent, when I look back on my life, I think, ‘Whoa, did I do that?’ It was the best time of my life in a sense. It came with a price — a lot of stress a lot of anxiety for me — but it was the best journey of my life.”

The DJ still has over 30 dates left on his ‘last tour’, the final show being on 28th August in Ibiza. This doesn’t at all mean that he’s retiring from music though as Avicii says he’ll be working harder than ever and will even have another album coming out soon.

“I’m collecting what I have left from the last eight years, stuff I’ve always loved but haven’t had an outlet for, and I’m seeing what to release and what not to release.”
