Posted at October 1st, 2017 | by Sidhantha Jain | in Entertainment, Featured, Music Festivals

Whoever said you can’t enjoy at a music festival alone has never tried doing so. There’s no greater thrill than tripping solo as you get to plan your own itinerary, choose the artists you want to watch and have an opportunity of stepping outside your comfort zone.

If you need a little bit of help in anything from planning your travel to executing it, we’ve got a bunch of useful tools to make your stag travel experience is pleasant! All of the mobile apps mentioned below are free and available on both Android as well as iOS.

Do you have any tips for a better “me, myself and I” expedition? Feel free to comment below with any suggestions and we’ll incorporate them in our upcoming posts.

1. Airbnb

Coming back to an empty hotel room at the end the day can be boring. Apart from that, these experiences are pretty standard without much sense of the place you’re staying at (except, where you have a great view!) Most Airbnb apartments are well equipped with basic amenities. You have a choice of staying alone or spending time with the host. The application also offers curated activities with the host allowing you to truly explore like a local!

2. Audiocompass

This app produces beautiful audio guides which go a long way towards bringing stories about A LOT of places to life. It covers more than a thousand points of interest across India and is the official audio tour partner of the Ministry of Tourism. The guides range from 30 to 90 minutes. You can download them and listen offline.

3. Tripoto

It is global community of travelers which helps you discover trips shared by real people. It contains an extensive library of itineraries, collection of recommended accommodation options to match every budget and allows you to make bookings directly. Once you’re done with your trip, upload your trip or publish a video to help others.

4. Smart 24×7

If you’re a solo traveler, this SOS application is a must. You can use it to generate a ‘panic alert’ when you’re in an unsafe situation and simply by pressing the panic button on the app or pressing the power button thrice you can send out an alert to five emergency contacts. The information also goes to the Smart 24×7 call centre and the local police who will be informed of your real time location so they can react on time.

5. Travel Solo

Android’s equivalent of SoloTraveller, once you register on the app, you can easily connect with other solo travelers who may be travelling to your destination. It comes in handy when you want to travel together or share your experiences with strangers via stories, photos and videos. You can say, it’s tinder for travelling!

6. Vizeat

This application lets you into a stranger’s kitchen which makes it like the Airbnb for food! All you have to do is put in your destination and dates of travel and you’ll get a list of hosts who will welcome into their homes for a meal or a food walk. It’s a nice way of meeting locals but unfortunately, it is not being used extensively in India as of now.

7. Google Maps

It is one of those essential apps you should always have on your phone because let’s face it, without it you’ll end up getting lost even in your hometown. Its powerful search functionality and ‘near me’ feature makes it better than its competitors any day! Even though Apple Maps received a massive update with iOS 11, its reliability is still questionable.

8. Google Translate

You already know why this Google product is on the list. Now you can easily translate text using the phone’s camera or even pre-saved images and speak a few words of the language to converse with the locals. It is to be kept in mind, this feature doesn’t support all languages for speech to text.

9. XE

It helps you calculate how much your rupees are worth when you travel abroad with XE’s real time currency conversion. You might argue, why you need an additional app when you have Google search; it works offline till the time you have updated the rates before visiting a country you do not need to connect to any network. The premium feature alerts you when a rate hits the target you have set for best exchange rates.

10. Hopper

Like any other flight ticket aggregator, it lets you find the cheapest airfare, additionally, it informs you when it is the best time to buy the tickets!

11. TripAdvisor

Apps like TripAdvisor and Trivago are meta-search providers, which mean they collect and collate prices from different booking sites around and help you find the best rate. You can also directly book within the app.

A tried and tested tip: before booking a room with any website, call up with the hotel and confirm with the front desk, you might end up getting a better deal or an upgrade!

12. Google Trips

If you are a regular traveler, Trips by Google is your perfect companion.  The app serves as a planner and guide for anyone who is exploring a new place. It organizes your tickets, hotel reservations and offers editorial guides to more than 200 cities making it personal based on your Google history.

13. Foursquare

A bit uncommon in the Indian market, Foursquare is a local discovery service mobile app which provides personalized recommendations of places to go to near a user’s current location based previous browsing history, purchases, or check-in history. You can always use Zomato to search for restaurants but along with food, this application also includes other places too.

14. Tourlina

The only application which is not available on Android yet, Tourlina is meant for solo female travelers which will help them find a female travel buddy within a trusted network of verified users. The concept sounds safe and friendly, keeping in mind the plight of women travelers. However, I am not sure how well it will work in the subcontinent because it hasn’t picked up much pace because of its peculiarities and underwhelming marketing.

15. My Safetipin

This India-based app assists you in finding areas which are safe to visit. It provides you with a safety score based on nine parameters like lighting, population density, and transportation. Its night mode is for neighborhoods which may be less safe at night and has the ability notify authorities in case of an emergency.
