Today I am going to tell you guys a story.

The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was one of the first programmable drum machines introduced by the Roland Corporation in early 1980’s whereas the Roland TB-303 Bass Line is a bass synthesizer with built-in sequencer. These machines played a defining role in the development of contemporary dance music. One canal most credit these two machines for the birth of what we know as HOUSE music.

House music originated in Chicago in the early 1980’s and gained a lot of popularity by the mid 80’s. The genre started evolving into many other genres and sub genres we love listening to these days. Acid House is a sub-genre of House music developed around the mid-1980s by DJ’s from Chicago. The defining feature of the genre, the ‘squelching’ bass sound was produced using the Roland TB-303 electronic synthesizer-sequencer.

charanjitsinghThis has been the popular belief of how Acid House started.

Now let’s roll back the years and go back to 1982, India. An orchestra conductor named Charanjit Singh released an album called Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat, an album originally intended as a fusion of Electronic Disco Music with Indian Classical Ragas. Singh’s genius idea involuntarily led to probably the earliest example of Acid House music; predating Phuture’s seminal Chicago Acid House record “Acid Tracks” (1987) by five years.

Even the highly acclaimed British newspaper The Guardian published an article on our Indian unsung hero back in2010. Recently toured renowned German duo Modeselektor made sure that their trip to our country includes meeting ‘Acid House Godfather’ Charanjit Singh.

Unfortunately, Singh’s album failed to get the recognition it deserved. He went on to produce a truck load of Hindi music. He currently lives in Bombay, making a living doing live shows with his wife who sings Bengali songs for private events.

Why did Charanjit Singh’s amazingly innovative album go unnoticed worldwide?
This is what we think why it went unnoticed:
1) Most of us do not have an open mind

2) Most of us do not have an opinion of our own

3) Most of us do not appreciate others work

4) And most importantly, most of us are ignorant

The list is endless. But, does all of this really matter? All this ranting and complaining about this or that.

So what should we do about this?
I would like to quote our very own Mahatma Gandhi here, “Be the change you want to see” (Not sure, whether he really said that or not but, we are sure you have caught onto our drift)

Let’s join hands and support our Indian artists and give them the attention they deserve. Let’s not make them wait for two three decades for their work to be found and appreciated. So here, we are three friends starting off something. Something that will help Indian artist sand audience alike. Our motive is to bring at least one percent of change in the whole scene. Something, which can only be achieved with your support. Join hands with us in order to make a difference and to kick start this movement.Yes, the change has begun 🙂
