Former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd sentenced over death threats & drugs

Phil Rudd, best known as former AC/DC drummer, was sentenced to eight months of home detention in New Zealand on Thursday after he pleaded guilty for threatening to kill one of his former employees and for illegal possession of drugs.

According to a court summary from April, Rudd fired several of his employees last year because his first-ever solo album ‘Head Job‘ had flopped in the charts after its release in August last year. He was even arrested last November after an angry incident related to it.

The 61-year-old had faced up to seven years in prison for the threat charges at Tauranga District Court on New Zeeland’s North Island.

Rudd pleaded guilty in April, admitting that he called an associate and said he wanted his former personal assistant “taken out”. Later, he telephoned the victim and threatened to kill him. On November 6, when police went to question him over threats they found stashes of methamphetamine and marijuana at Rudd’s apartment.

Rudd’s original charges of attempt to procure a murder an threatening the victim’s daughter were finally dropped. His lawyer had said the threats were “just an angry phone call” and that the drummer could not travel to some countries to perform as the drug conviction would have some severe consequences.

The way the story has played out AC/DC were forced to move on without Rudd for their New Zeeland and Australia tour later this year featuring their new album ‘Rock or Bust.’ Chris Slade has been brought back as Rudd’s replacement who joined the band for the first time in more than two decades as part of the Grammy Awards broadcast on February 8 and will be continuing as the official drummer for future tours.
