Flying For A Music Festival? Never Instagram Your Boarding Pass

Posted at January 19th, 2017 | by Shivani Goel | in

It’s the age of social media, and with the many different portals to spew our lives onto the internet, people like to document pretty much every passing moment onto apps like Instagram and Facebook. Vacations are the ultimate picture-worthy times and when you’re at the airport or on a plane you usually have a lot of time to take an aesthetically appealing picture of your boarding pass to put up on social media. It’s not an uncommon thing to do, Instagram has over 80,000 readily available #boardingpass posts and it’s time to learn why you absolutely shouldn’t do this.

Apart from the obvious, your name, flight details, and PNR number, there are a lot of other things that a person can get access to from your boarding pass. Just these details itself are enough to track you down, or alter your flight bookings online! Even if you are smart enough to hide your PNR or landing time, there are still many other things to be gleaned from your pass. The barcode can be read with a simple online scanner and can reveal information like when the flight was booked, your itinerary, and even your credit card details and phone number.

Needless to say, there are a lot of crooks out there waiting to scam people in some way or the other. The dangers range from someone messing with your flight bookings to a full on stalker situation. It’s possible in extreme situations to duplicate your emails and messages which would provide easy access to purchasing things online even if you get OTP’s for two factor authentication.

Yes, nothing at all may happen if you put up your #boardingpass online, but it is not worth the risk because the consequences can be dire. Your travel dates also let people know exactly when your house may be empty and exactly when to find you somewhere. This is not something you want to make general knowledge as it’s just asking for trouble. So next time when you’re flying out for work, vacation, music festival, or anything else, be careful, and if you must put up a picture, then put it smartly, like the one below.
