Women Who Are Killing It In The DJ-ing World

The dance music industry is not just a guys’ industry anymore. While there are still a lot more men who are dominating the stages and lineups, a lot of female DJs have started making their mark in the industry. So check out these female DJs who are rising stars in the industry.

Alison Wonderland

She started out as a classically-trained cellist and now she’s a versatile producer who hit the top of the Dance/Electronic Album charts in 2015 with Run. Alison Wonderland has collaborated with Lido, The Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne, and AWE. Her lead single from the album got around 3 million plays on SoundCloud and 6 million on Spotify.

Anja Schneider

Anja Schneider learnt how to DJ while working in radio which helped convert her long-running show into Mobilee Records. The label has released records by Pan-Pot, Maya Jane Coles, and more, while Anja pursues her own career. She released her debut album in 2008 and has a killer array of Essential Mixes.

Annie Mac

Annie Mac landed her first BBC Radio 1 show in 2004 and has now become an industry heavyweight. She draws more than a million listeners on her Friday night Radio 1 show and she even recently expanded to BPM Channel 51 and SiriusXM.

The Black Madonna

The Black Madonna plays regular residencies in Chicago at the famous Smart Bar. She has a strong music philosophy that serves as a testament to the inspirational potential of dance music.

Blond:ish

Blond:ish was formed in Montreal in the late ‘00s and they released music on labels like Berlin’s Get Physical and Cologne’s Kompakt. They’ve also made a lot of official remixes.

Ellen Allien

With 8 albums to her name, Allien has a label; BPitch Control, which has artists like Modeselektor, Apparat, and Paul Kalkbrenner signed on it. She has a lot of prestigious residencies.

 

Francesca Lombardo

Francesca Lombardo worked in London clubs under the moniker Jackie Misfit. She released her own music on Crosstown Rebels and also gathered following due to her sets at Burning Man.

Gina Turner

Gina Turner has done a number of shows for Scion, iHeartRadio, Underground FG, and Sirius XM’s BPM. She has also released music in labels like Ultra, Sound Pellegrino, and Ministry of Sound.

 

Ida Engberg

Ida Engberg started DJing in the club scene in Sweden. She released most of her music on the Drumcode and Truesoul labels, and has headlined the New York debut of the famous Dutch Awakenings Festival.

Magda

Magda become part of Detroit‘s underground techno scene mentored by Richie Hawtin. She followed him to Berlin in 2003 and eventually launched her imprint Items & Things with Troy Piece and Marc Houle.

 

Maya Jane Coles

Maya Jane Coles got her breakthrough in 2011 with her single “What They Say”. She has a well regarded album and has played at festivals like Coachella, Glastonbury, Tomorrowland, and EDC.

Mija

Mija got lucky when she invited Skrillex to play B2B with her in Bonnaroo. The OWSLA boss took her under his wing and since then she’s been on a road to success.

 

Nicole Moudaber

Techno‘s queen Nicole Moudaber has lived in a number of cities across the world. Her 2013 album, Believe helped her make her mark in the techno world. She’s kept at it with her dynamic DJ sets and her label MOOD Records.

 

Nina Kraviz

Nina Kraviz likes raw, imperfect sound. “I don’t like clean finished music that has no character. I really like personality… There should be something f—ed up… That’s what makes it unique and interesting.” She released her debut album in 2012 and found трип label in 2014.

Jennifer Lee was the first female artist to join Flying Lotus‘ label Brainfeeder. She released her Midnight Menu LP in 2010 and since then has dropped more album on her own label, Young Art Records.

 

Krewella

Pakistani-American sisters Jahan Yousaf and Yasmine Yousaf formed Krewella in 2007. Based in the US, they used to play with their third member Kristopher “Rain Man” Trindl till he resigned in 2014. Their musical style draws upon house, dubstep, hardstyle, techno, Drub & Bass, and electronic rock, and the sisters have performed at most of the major venues and festivals across the world.

Rezz

DeadMau5‘s protégé, Isabelle Rezazadeh, aka REZZ, has quickly made a name for herself thanks to her genre-smashing brand of sinister techno. Despite being self-taught, her edgy and hard-hitting productions draw comparisons to Gesaffelstein and Trent Reznor.

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose is a woman of many talents. Apart from DJing, the Australian is also a model, recording artist, actress, television presenter, and former MTV VJ.

Nora En Pure

Daniela Niederer, AKA Nora En Pure is a South African – Swiss DJ and deep house producer. She’s one of the most well known female DJs in the industry and is constantly performing at some of the best venues across the world.

Nervo

Miriam Nervo and Olivia Nervo are Australian musicians, record producers, composers, singers, songwriters, models, and DJs known by their stage name NERVO. After signing with Sony when they were 18, the sisters pursued careers as songwriting partners and steadily rose in fame and success.
