End of Nightlife in Chandigarh?

‘Nightlife in Delhi’ has been quite a trending topic in the Capital city since forever with some or the other restrictions being imposed by the government now and then. But now it looks like Chandigarh is also catching up on the ‘restriction on nightlife’ vibes of Delhi. The UT Administration is all set to pass a policy that will mandate the closure of all the clubs/discotheques in the city strictly at 12 midnight.

Currently, the clubs in the city are open till 1 am on the weekdays and 2 am on the weekends. UT Administrator Kaptan Singh Solanki has approved the draft policy ‘Controlling of Places of Public Amusement 2016’ under which discotheques will not be allowed to be open beyond midnight. Moreover, the policy also mandates that no one would be allowed to enter without a valid identity card. Wait there’s more, this policy applies to not only clubs but also to pool game parlours, virtual reality games, game machine parlours and bowling alleys.

The concerns have been raised after recent cases of lawlessness and last year’s major firing incident outside a sector 8 club. Here’s what Home secretary Anurag Agrarwal had to say about the draft policy “In accordance with Punjab & Haryana high court directions, we have come up with a policy. It is aimed at curbing untoward incidents at night. We have got the policy approved from UT Administrator and the Punjab high court will notify it soon.

Other ramifications of the draft policy will include installation of CCTV cameras at entrance and other prominent places in a club, deployment of a female bouncer, display of rate list for tickets and passes at the entrance at a club.

If the timings of discotheques is changed from 1 am to 12 midnight, business will be hit. The crowd will shift to the Zirakpur Highway where discotheques remain open till sunrise. The risk to lives of youngsters will increase.” MPS Chawla, Chairman of The Altius – Ten Drowning Street.
