Why Multi-Genre Festivals Are Replacing EDM Only Lineups In India

Posted at October 23rd, 2017 | by Yash Vikram Singh | in Entertainment, Featured, GVO Opinion

If we’re looking at live gigs from a universal point of view then Dance Music only started dominating after every other widespread genre was running at full throttle. But the Indian version is quite different. It’s not that we didn’t witness any mass-scale gigs in the country before the Dance Music bubble burst, they just didn’t run as rampant as they are now.

Ever since Dance Music graced India back in 2012-2013 a lot has changed. These festivals transitioned from core house music to Trap & Psy and host of other genres. We finally have to ourselves diverse music festivals like Vh1 Supersonic, Nh7 Weekender & Timeout 72. As avid Dance Music is slowing down, a host of other genres are picking up.

And while these transitions are happening right before our eyes, it is in no way down to people getting bored from Dance Music but that other genres have become much more intriguing now and hit just the right spot vis-a-vis stimulating music fans’ brains. India is becoming as manifold a powerhouse as any and festivals like Vh1 Supersonic are playing a big part. There was a time some years ago when not many have had cared about Macklemore or Jay Z but it would be an understatement to say that this year’s shindig in February shook things up.

India is much more receptive to other genres now and a host of new festivals are capitalizing on this while helping us see the light. Dance Music is for sure receding to make room for other genres that the country hadn’t gotten a taste of before.
