10 EDM Artists Who Had Boring Day Jobs Before They Became Famous

Your favourite EDM artists may seem larger than life right now, but they weren’t exactly born behind a console. A lot of artists had to work their way from regular jobs and try their hardest to get into the music industry. From Calvin Harris working at the grocery store, to Paul Van Dyk being a carpenter, here are 10 artists and their previous jobs.


Moby, Golf Caddy


Before becoming famous, Moby worked as a golf caddy for a short while. He late explained that he did it to raise money to buy a David Bowie album, and that is how he was influenced to take up music production.


Diplo, Teacher


Diplo used to work as an after-care school teacher in Philadelphia, helping kids with behavioral problems learn how to read, solve math problems.


Laidback Luke, Graffiti Artist

Laidback Luke wanted to become a comic book illustrator but started foraying into graffiti. He stopped when he was eventually caught, and turned his attention to music full time.


Kaskade, Church Missionary

Paul Van Dyk, Broadcast Technician & Carpenter

Being raised in tough circumstances, Paul Van Dyk had to take a few detours before he got to pursue music. Working odd jobs as a broadcast technician and then a carpenter, helped him get closer to his goal.


Miriam and Olivia Nervo, Models

Although modelling is not a regular job, it’s still not being a musician. The sisters were recognized for their looks when they were 16 but they keep music their main focus.


Calvin Harris, Grocery Store Employee

Calvin Harris worked for years in a grocery store before making it big. He was good at it due his height. He even worked at a fish factory for a year.


Pete Tong, Music Journalist

Richie Hawtin, Mcdonalds Employee, Corn Detasseler

Hawtin worked a bunch of jobs before he made it in the music industry. He did a brief stint at a video store, he worked at McDonalds, and he even worked as a corn detasseler.


Destructo, Radio Personality

Gary Richards became an on-air radio personality known as “the Bush Man”. He was the youngest ever radio host for Power 98 in 1989.
