The Downsides of Being a Music DJ/ Producer

Posted at May 27th, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

Being a DJ is not just crazy live shows and being recognised on the streets if you make it to that level of fame. There is a lot of struggle and a lot of self doubts that sprout up from the inception of the idea of becoming a DJ to actually making it. Here are some downsides of being a DJ.

#Most people won’t understand what you do. It’s difficult to explain that you aren’t just plugging in a pen drive and jumping to tunes.

#Haters are going to rip you apart on the internet. If people even mildly dislike your music they are going to be very vocal about it. You’re going get no breaks when it comes to people hating on your music.

# No one really cares about your work. Except for your closest friends and family, (which is also questionable), people really don’t care about what you’re doing unless you’re already famous.

# You’re your own worst critic. Only you can pick out flaws in your music down to every second and berate yourself for not making it better.

# Making money is not easy. Scoring paid gigs and actually earning off your music is a super difficult level to achieve.

# Terrible artists are more popular than you. This is a fact of life. People who clearly make worse music than you will be ahead of you through whatever combination of luck and skill and you just have to deal with it.

# You have to keep listening to the same music. You have to listen to your own music a hundred times to make and perfect it and eventually you just become desensitized to your own tunes.

# Everyone has access to all your released music for free. Illegal downloading and streaming is a reality that you can’t ignore.
