Delhi Nightlife Back to life? #Drinkat21 #Eatafter1AM

After sealing terraces and prohibiting loud music after 11 pm by restaurants and clubs, the distinguished nightlife in Delhi has somewhat come to a halt. This decision has not only disappointed party goers but has hindered the food/alcohol businesses.

According to a national daily, the Delhi Government has proposed to bring down the legal drinking age for soft liquor (wine and beer) from the existing age of 25 to 21 years. Presently, Delhi, Punjab, Assam, Chandigarh, Haryana and Meghalaya are the states which have 25 years as the legal drinking age, while 7 states have 18 years as the legal age for drinking. The proposition is however, yet to be approved by the government.

This probable scheme is followed by the recommendation of tourism minister Kapil Mishra to have the restaurants remain open beyond the current deadline of 1am, till 2.30am. His intention is in line with the recommendations given by the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) to improve tourism in the capital, which included a revival of the night bazaar in Chandni Chowk.  The bid by NRAI is to extend operating hours on weekends on beta for the initial three months.

“NRAI came to me with this proposal and I am waiting to get it in writing to act on it. However, on the face of it, I believe that extending operating hours will not just benefit the industry but is also essential in the city with several people getting free from work at late hours, It will also secure the streets which, right now, are completely desolate at night. We will look into the viability of this recommendation and see how it can be implemented.”

All we can do for now is support the clause and share this to show our support for the proposal!
