Common Tongue: The latest masterpiece by Bandish Projekt feat. Last Mango in Paris

Bandish Projekt is alien music producer Mayur Narvekar who is a Mumbai based DJ, composer, producer and musician. Fusing classical Indian music with insane electronic beats, he composes unique and catchy sounds. Narvekar released his first album ‘Correkt’ in 2009, and the song Alchemy is his biggest hit till date.

Shane Solanki is a spoken word artist, better known as Last mango in Paris. A verbal genius who dabbles in comedy, music, poetry, and performance. He is also a humanitarian who helps organizations shape and share their stories.

These two brilliant musicians have been bouncing ideas overseas since a decade, bound by their Indian identity and Common Tongue. Their last EP included hit singles like Alchemy and Brown Skin Beauty, which raked awards across the globe for it’s insane and vibrant videos.

The Common Tongue EP has Shane’s soft, dynamic vocals layered over Mayur’s electronic compositions. It’s spoken poetry meets Indian classical music meets electronic music. There are 7 soulful songs, each with an inspiration more intense than the last.

The track ‘Cows’ is a bit of a deviation from the album when it comes to inspiration. It’s a cheeky satire on the misogynistic song ‘Area Codes’ by Ludacris, featuring sick rap strings in Gujrati by MC Tod Fod.

Language of Love’ is our top pick. It’s a moody, melancholic track, and is reminiscent of Shane Solanki’s first release ‘Accepting Tranquility’. It’s worked around table rhythms, which were first made popular by pioneers like Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Other tracks like ‘Kali Yatra’, which sounds like an Indian Sitar Trek, and ‘Party People’ which reflects the society’s desire for equality, empathy, and social change, rounds up this album into the masterpiece that it is.

The Arts Council, British Council, South Bank Centre, An Indian Summer, and Leicester Curve have supported Mayur and Shane’s collaboration, and it was produced by Bheja Fry Records.
