Coachella Over The Years

Posted at January 21st, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

The seed of Coachella was planted in 1993 and Pearl Jam played at the Empire Polo Club fields where 25,000 people sat and watched them perform. The first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was organised in 1999, and now it’s the highest grossing festival in the world. Here’s a look at this legendary festival since it’s inception.

1999

1999
At the first Coachella, Artists like Tool, Morrissey, and The Chemical Brothers headlined and around 25,000 people attended but the festival couldn’t make a profit. People complained about the heat and the lack of accommodation on venue.

2000

2000

After going into loss in 1999, the festival organisers decided to skip it this year so they could spend time in figuring out how to make Coachella more profitable.

2001

2001

The Coachella Music & Arts Festival was brought back this year with changes. It was held in April to avoid peak summer, and it was a one day festival this time. It was definitely more successful as compared to the 1999 edition.

2002

2002-2This year they went back to being a two day festival and was more profitable and successful than ever before. They also created campgrounds for the convenience of the attendees. Also, for the first time ever, there was a female headliner artist, Bjork.

2003

2004-2

This year Coachella garnered a lot of attention worldwide. 2003 saw the largest crowd yet, with popular headliners like the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

2004

2004

For the first time ever Coachella sold out, with 50,000 tickets sold for each day. Headliners like Radiohead, and The Cure pulled in more crowd and the festival started setting itself apart with it’s killer lineups.

2005

2005

This year was again sold out and very profitable. Iconic bands like Coldplay and Nine Inch Nails performed, creating music history.

2006

2006

Daft Punk headlined, playing one of their best sets in the history of Coachella. It was another profitable and sold out year. Other popular artists like Madonna, Massive Attack, and Tool also performed.

2007

2007

Bjork headlined again, but the artist that created the most buzz was Rage Against the Machine. 2007 saw around 1,00,000 attendees and was extended into a 3 day festival. It also sold out the fastest ever.

2008

2008

With things going so well for the festival, it was a shock for the organisers when the 2008 edition wasn’t sold out. Headliners like Prince, Jack Johnson, and Death Cab for Cutie were playing but this was the first time since 2003 that the festival wasn’t jam-packed.

2009

2009

To the relief of festival organisers, this year was sold out a few days before Coachella was slated to begin. Legend Paul McCartney was one of the most crowd pulling headliners.

2010

2010

In 2010 Coachella saw a total of 2,25,000 attendees over the three days. Tickets sold were much lesser, so clearly security was lacking. Headliners like Jay-Z, Tiesto, and Muse drove the enormous crowd wild.

2011

2011

After the previous over-crowded editions, security was tightened. Wristbands were created, and no one without a wristband was allowed within a one mile radius of the grounds. Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, and Kanye West were some of the headliners.

2012

2012

With popularity reaching new heights, Coachella expanded to a two-weekend festival with the same lineup for both weekends. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg closed the festival and there was also a boom of EDM artists like Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, and David Guetta.

2013

2013

A hologram of rap god Tupac Shakur drove the fans crazy. Another successful year went by with great bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blur, and Vampire Weekend on the lineup.

2014

2014

The festival got a luxurious upgrade this year with 4 course dinners, round trip jet services, and expensive alcohol. Outkast reunited for the festival for the first time since 2007, and other popular artists like Lorde, Skrillex, and MGMT also performed.

2015

2015

From classic rock like AC/DC to pop band Florence and the Machine, the line-up was spectacular and diverse. Tame Impala, Weeknd, Alesso, there was a lot to look forward to.
