Chicane “Sum of its Parts”: Falsely Belittled

Posted at February 26th, 2015 | by Mayank.arora | in

Admit it – if you were born before 1990 there’s a good chance you’ve lost it at some point to a Chicane aka Nick Bracegirdle’s track. Tracks like “Saltwater”, “Poppiholla”, “No ordinary morning” etc made him a legend in the genre of trance at that time.

Chicane came out with his sixth album “The sum of its parts” in Jan, 2015 but it was his first since the EDM movement and thus, could not garner as many views as it actually deserved. The album begins conventionally with a soft, easy listening track titled ‘Eglise’. From then on expect progressive house and trance crossover tracks. Songs like ‘38 Weeks’ start off with a blissful section complete with smooth trance sound along with a woman’s soulful voice before jumping straight into a pounding snare drum that creates awesome rhythm.

Chicane’s alias is Disco Citizens which he uses to record remixes of his tracks. The follow-up to 2012’s Thousand Mile Stare offers a few flashes of the brilliance that made the 43-year-old such a Balearic favorite during the mid-late 90s – the ethereal collaboration with The Voice UK runner-up Bo Bruce (“Still with Me”) and the retro house of “One More Time” are certainly worthy of gracing any future Best Of compilation.

Chicane is one of those DJs who knows how to mix up the sound while still staying relevant and not stuck in the 90s. Though underrated, The Sum of Its Parts cannot be missed by any trance lover as it is a prototype of how music can actually speak to the soul.
