Paul David HewsonKBE OL (born 10 May 1960), known by his stage name Bono is an Irish singer-songwriter, musician, venture capitalist, businessman, and philanthropist. He is best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of rock band U2. He has been synonymous with rock royalty since his breakthrough with U2 in 1980, their debut signalling a new era in rock music. Check out a selection of some of their greatest songs below:
  1. Sunday Bloody Sunday – The opening song of War, their 1983 masterpiece is a great piece of music not just because of its foot-stomping bass line and jangly guitar solos, but because of its political connotations as it was written to pay tribute to the 1972 massacre of Catholic civil rights demonstrators by British soldiers in Northern Ireland.
  2. With or Without You – This epic love song from their 1987 career-defining album The Joshua tree has become one of U2’s best-known songs, and it often appears in music critics’ rankings of the best songs of all-time. In 2000, the song appeared at number eight on Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Pop Songs”, compiled by Rolling Stone and MTV music critics to rank songs released since The Beatles’ breakthrough.
  3. One – This 1991 song is also a massively important U2 hit, with lyrics playing on the failures and trials of a relationship in Bono’s trademark soul-stirring voice. This also ranks as one of the best songs in their catalogue with bands covering this piece through the years since it first came out.
  4. Vertigo – During the How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb recording sessions, “Vertigo” was originally recorded as a song called “Full Metal Jacket”. Bono said during a webchat that the song was “the mother of all rock ‘n’ roll tunes. I don’t know where it came from but it’s a remarkable guitar thing”. And the Grammy judges agreed as this song made a mark on both the charts and in our hearts.
  5. Elevation –  “Elevation” won the “Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” in 2002 and fittingly it was a chart topper as well. Featuring Edge’s powerful riffs coupled with Bono’s crooning brilliance, this song is perfect energizer to get your mojo going.
