Billboard Unveils 2016 Power 100 List

Posted at February 22nd, 2016 | by Aditya | in

Billboard Power 100 is a list of top grossing and best record label executives and managers. Let’s go through the whole theory behind the Billboard’s Power 100 Rankings:

There are these committees of Billboard editors and reporters who put in a variety of factors and makeweights in determining this Power 100 rankings. Factors include consumer behaviour based on the chart performances, social media impact, number of radio audiences and TV audiences reached and finally the overall impact that they have on the whole of music industry. Billboard even considers the share that a record-label shares in the industry and the market.

Billboard Power 100 has seen Kanye West and Lana Del Rey pair up for the cover of Billboard magazine’s annual Power 100 issue. The two musicians come under the same Universal Music Group and have posed alongside UMG Chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge. The Power 100 list for this year includes major music influencers like Jimmy Iovine, Irving Azoff, Jay Brown, Antonio ‘L.A’ Reid & Sylvia Rhone, Birdman, Craig Kallman & Julie Greenwald and many more.

So here are the Top 10 of the Billboard Power 100.

Lucian Grainge

The Chairman/CEO of the Universal Music Group and the number one inductee to the Billboard’s Power 100 list Lucian Grainge has been at the number one spot since last two years. He has transformed Universal Music Group into the most dominant company in the history of the musical fraternity and business. Its prize list included 7 of 2015’s 10 best-selling albums and 38.5% of the year’s recorded-music sales. The UMG has been the second biggest music publishing company of all times.

Michael Rapino

President and CEO of Live Nation ended up being second for the second consecutive year. Talking about business, Live Nation had 11 of the top 25 tours in the year 2015. This is more than any other promoter present at this moment. It had One Direction at #2 with a total gross of $208 million for 80 shows and U2 at #3 with a gross of $152 million at 76 venues.

Trent Reznor, Jimmy Iovine, Robert Kondrk Eddy Cue

Eddy Cue, The Senior VP Internet & Software Services, Apple.
Robert Kondrk, VP Apple’s Media Apps & Content.
Trent Reznor, Executive, Apple.
With their decisions of entering the industry these three changed Apple’s position in the streaming industry and within just six months of their rebirth, Apple had 10 million thanks to its Beats 1 online radio station and the DJ’s performing with their sets. It included Zane Lowe, Dre, Elton John and many more. Apple has been the biggest music retailer in the United States since 2008, and the estimates provided by Billboard shows that last year Apple was responsible for 40 cents of every dollar that music retailers and digital services paid to labels for U.S. sales and streaming.

Doug Morris

The CEO of Sony Music Doug Morris moved from last year’s 7th position to 4th position this year. The credit goes to Adele, whose “25” shattered first-week sales records and sold 7.4 million copies in the year 2015. Sony Music also laid its claim to the most downloaded song of 2015 – Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars, over 5.5 million copies of which were sold.

Martin Bandier

74-year old Martin Bandier is the Chairman/CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing. His last year’s Ranking 4th fell to 5th this year. With the company’s ownership in doubts, Sony/ATV music publishing found its rejuvenation as Martin Bandier the longtime publishing kingpin found a new contract for himself. Sony/ATV’s revenue increased from $409 million in 2014 to $436 million in the first nine months of the calendar year 2015, further finishing 2015 with an estimated 30 percent market share.

Irving Azoff

Irving Azoff the Chairman and CEO of Azoff Madison Square Entertainment along with Tim Leiweke. He slipped from the number 3 position to this year’s #6. Two of the Azoff-managed venues – The Madison Square Garden and The Forum based in Inglewood California – were the top two grossing U.S. arenas in 2015.

Coran Capshaw

Coran Capshaw, the Founder of Red Light Management, ranked 6th last year in Billboard’s Power 100 now occupies 7th position. Red Light Management has a whole checklist of touring, management, branding, venues, festivals, labels and merchandising concerns. With an estimate of $1 billion gross in forms of revenue in 2015, the management has seen artists with 27 Grammy nominations under their affiliation.

Len Blavatnik

Ukraine born industrialist Len Blavatnik is the Vice Chairman and Owner of the Warner Music Group. With last years ranking in 11th position we can say WMG has grown into prominence and is still making its way up in the world of music. In 2015, Warner Music Group had some breakthroughs with Twenty One Pilots, Jess Glynne and Robin Schulz. WMG showed its growth worldwide with such signings.

Rob Light

Rob Light is a Partner, Managing Director and the Head of Music at Creative Artists Agency. With an amazing list of success stories firstly starting with top tours alongside One Direction, AC/DC, Katy Perry, James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac and Bette Midler. Secondly, the number of breakout new artists who are turning out to be huge success themselves including Brantley Gilbert, Sam Hunt, Meghan Trainor, Leon Bridges and Tori Kelly. With signings of Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey in their bag, they have everything in order to become a huge hit in the long run.

Daniel Ek

The Co-Founder and CEO at Spotify Daniel Ek moved from the 20th position in the Billboard’s Power 100 list to this year’s 10th position. In the calendar year 2015 Apple Music emerged as the only competitor to Spotify. They could have gone much further in this list if Taylor Swift and Adele have withheld their music with the on-demand streaming service.

At number 66 is an Indian born CMO for MasterCard Raja Rajamannar. Being an indian we have something to feel proud about after his inclusion in Billboard’s Power 100 list. Raja got appointed as the CMO for mastercard in the year 2013 and that was the time when he met Justin Timberlake for Mastercard’s sponsorship in his 20/20 Experience Tour in almost all of the countries known. Which in future led to a Mastercard campaign known as The Priceless Surprise where he used to hang out with lucky Mastercard customers at locations worldwide.

Raja further made a collaboration with Gwen Stefani. The idea of this collaboration was to surprise mastercard holders with gifts when. During the period of this collaboration Stefani stands on top of a building with a T-shirt cannon from where she launched gifts at MasterCard holders. The gifts had handbags, some tickets and passes to golf clubs for fun and concert tickets. The promotion ran for about a month with a lot of buzz.

Behind such collaborations Rajamannar had seen the future where he saw success and he provided the mastercard holders to get a chance and become cashless VIPs at key EDM franchises like Electric Zoo.
