The Annual Billboard Dance Power List Is Out And Diplo Is On Top

Posted at June 10th, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

Billboard‘s Third annual Power List of DJ’s and Executives is out and everyone has an opinion about it. Diplo is on top with Artist of the Year after a stellar year with Jack Ü and Major Lazer. Everyone has an opinion and EDM and it’s bursting bubble so here are the winners and what they think!

DJ/ Producer, and founder of Mad Decent, Diplo won artist of the year. He doesn’t care much for the win and has a harsh take on the EDM scene. “The DJ world is the corniest f–ing group of people. We’re not celebrities, we’re not famous for any good reason. We’re just … really lame. Besides people like Dillon Francis, who makes fun of the whole thing, or Calvin Harris, it’s a sinking ship. It’s a really lame culture. I’m sad that I’m part of it, but I play the game.” (Read the full Diplo feature here).

rs_634x824-160609092113-634.Diplo-Billboard.KF.6916Above & Beyond is also on the list and member Paavo Siljamäki said that a lesson they have learnt is that “Bigger isn’t always better; quieter is sometimes louder.” CEO of Dim Mak Records, Steve Aoki says his happiest moment was when he got to play at the Harvard Yardfest. Mau5trap label head DeadMau5 and DJ/ Producer DJ Snake are also on the power list. Recent rising star Flume is a Sydney native and believes that the biggest misconception about dance music is: “That it’s not real music because it’s not played on an instrument. I played sax for 10 years, but electronic music is appealing to me because there’s so much more control — you can take African drums or Amazonian flutes, distort them and pitch them down, and get this whole new access to the world of music.”

20 year old Dutch prodigy, Martin Garrix, is already an industry heavyweight and says that his biggest weakness is, “When I was young and inexperienced, I was quick to trust others in an industry full of sharks.” David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Kygo, and Kaskade are predictably on the list as well. Co-founder of OWSLA, Skrillex has some advice for newbies: “Be a f–ing kid, break rules, don’t care. Don’t try to get people’s attention. Let your art speak loud and people will find you.” Other people on the list include The Chainsmokers and Tiesto.
