Australia's Stereosonic Might Be Permanently Cancelled

Posted at April 6th, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

The Telegraph published a story about Australia’s national dance festival ‘Stereosonic‘ and it seems to have been “binned permanently”. The festival organizers haven’t confirmed the news yet and have declined commenting on the article and releasing a statement yet.

Usually Stereosonic announces the dates and tickets prices by March and the lineup by July but there has been no announcements regarding anything this year. The festival started in 2007 in Melbourne and over the past years has headlined artists like Tiesto, Clavin Harris, Armin Van Buuren, Carl Cox, and Nina Kravitz.

When Stereosonic’s U.S. parent company SFX filed for bankruptcy, the festival’s future was questioned but they stated that they “weren’t affected” by the financial restructuring. Last year, there was some public scrutiny because of a couple of drug-related deaths at the event. The founder, Richie McNeill said that promoters were working hard to make the festival safe, “All of the major promoters go over and above the call of duty to provide a safe environment, and just because people are making bad choices as individuals we are seen as the bad guys. There’s not much more we can do that we aren’t already doing.”

A close source has stated that Stereosonic is unlikely to return for a while, “All the core team behind Stereosonic have left SFX and there’s hardly anyone left to put on the festival. Plus SFX is dealing with bankruptcy in the US with the CEO Robert Sillerman gone and the business in disarray, it seems unlikely the festival will return.”
