Apple Music & YouTube Red are changing the way you listen to music

In response to music streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, Pandora and others, Apple launched Apple Music while YouTube launched YouTube Red on November 12, both monthly subscription based services.

Apple already provided the Beats Music service but according to a recent announcement they will be ending the service on November 30 in an effort to migrate users to Apple Music. In addition they even launched an Android App which shows how serious they are.

According to CEO Tim Cook, since Apple Music launched in June, 6.5 million people have signed on as paying subscribers, with another 8.5 million people participating in the music service’s 90-day free trial. By comparison, rival music service Spotify has 25 million paid members and another 50 million who listen for free.

In much the same way YouTube’s parent company Google already has the Google Music service in place but YouTube Red offers some major differences such as a dedicated app (Android & iOS) which features only music results instead of the vast variety usually available on YouTube. Additional options such as covers, tutorials, karaoke, live performances etc. will be provided if available. For people afraid of raking up high data charges, there is an audio only feature. All of this on a monthly subscription basis if you want to experience the ad free full feature mode.

Though this might not change the way a majority of Indian users listen to music, it is interesting to see the rise of subscription based services even from companies like Apple who refused to take the subscription based route until now. This will also mean new ways for Labels/Artists to receive revenue and connect with fans.

How do you think this move will affect music listening for content creators and consumers? Let us know in the comments below.
