Album Review: 'Skin' by Flume

Posted at May 28th, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

Harley Streten, a.k.a Flume, is one of the meteoric success stories in the electronic music industry. He made a big impact with his 2012 self-titled, debut album, which had brilliant tracks like ‘Sleepless’ and ‘Insane’. Now nearly 4 years later he’s releasing his studio album ‘Skin’. Flume began teasing fans with the album in late 2015 and dropped tracks ‘Never Be Like You’, ‘I Remember’, ‘Wall Fuck’, and ‘Say It’.

Flume is now one of the moved appreciated producers in the international music scene and his music style is unique and super influential. He’s played a major part in putting the Australian electronic music scene on the map. He’s a groundbreaking artist, a genre breaker, and his latest 16 track effort features guests like AlunaGeorge, Vic Mensa, Vince Staples, and more! Check it out below.

The Album begins with a gorgeous intro of ‘Helix’, which is surely going to be used as an opener for many of his sets. It has heavy bass layers and light flutes, and it apparently took Flume a whole year to make. It is followed by ‘Never Be Like You‘, the first single from the album, and very personal to singer and collaborator Kai. Flume is most proud of for his experimentation ‘Numb & Getting Colder’, and his gorgeous collaboration full of sex and temptation; ‘Say It’ with Tove Lo. ‘3’ is spacey and similar to music in his previous album, with wordless vocals throughout the track. ‘You Know’ is a banger of a song, featuring two rappers, which gives us a dark, cinematic, hip-hop song. The last track on the album is ‘Tiny Cities’, which ends the album on a somber note with the lyrics “it was never perfect, it was never meant to last.” Overall, the album is a great sophomore effort, absolutely unique, and with brilliant collaborations.

Our Favourites: Say It, Smoke & Retribution, and Tiny Cities.
