Album Review: My Love Is Cool by Wolf Alice

Posted at August 4th, 2015 | by Kamakshi Bhat | in

A four-piece alternative, Indie-rock band from North London consisting of Ellie Roswell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitars, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass), and Joel Amey (drums). My love is cool, their much anticipated debut album after the success of their self titled EP, was released on 22nd June, 2015. The band was formed in 2010 and consisted of only Roswell and Oddie. Their EP was uploaded by the band on soundcloud and NME put them under “people to hear” category.

The band’s musical style early in the scene was folk tinged pop, but they became more rock oriented after Rhythm section joined. The band themselves explained their sound as “rocky pop“. The band made sure that the build up to their album would be rather long after the success of their EP, but the album was worth the wait. The album is full of indie melodies, rock induced guitar riffs and unforgettable grunge sounds.

The best part of the album ‘Love Is Cool‘ is that it is full of surprises and is not the sound you’d be expecting. It kind of creeps up on you with huge guitar riffs, smashing vocals, a haunting yet almost irresistible sound to it with the catchy yet perfectly placed and much needed indie tempos, which give the album an edge. There is a variety is their sound and music which makes it feel like this is what you have been waiting for all your life without really realizing that. Lyrics of the songs from this album sound like quotes from a book. The seconds between the changing of a beat, a change in the guitar chords and a sudden increase in tempo with stunning vocals has given this album an edge it needed.

The track ‘Moaning Lisa smile’  sounds something really different and original. At the end of the song you feel hyper and excited, but those riffs will do that to anyone. Another one of their songs ‘Freazy’ has amazing indie disco sound and beats which makes it unique and wonderful. In ‘Giant Peach’  is one song which stands out in this album with Roswell transcending herself to madness and screams in her engaging voice.

Wolf Alice, with it’s unique sound and much creativity in their Debut album, is on it’s way to become one of the greatest bands. So, watch out for this one!
