Album Review: Cloud Nine by Kygo

Posted at May 23rd, 2016 | by Shivani Goel | in

Kygo got his claim to tropical house fame by remixing tracks by artists like Ed Sheeran, James Blake, and Coldplay. His rework of Sheeran’s ‘I See Fire; is probably one of his best tracks till date. Cloud Nine is his first full album comprising of original productions and while it’s mellow and gorgeous, it feels like a mix of hits and fillers. Half the tracks have been released over the course of the past year and they’re the better half of the album. The 55 minute album melds into one long, chill, soundtrack and lacks the sheer catchiness of some of his single tracks and remixes.

With his strong background in Piano, Kygo manages to imbue his music with brilliant melodies and some of them really hit the mark. He’s used mid level collaborative singers like Parson James, John Legend, Labyrinth, and Will Heard, and while they’re all good, they’re pretty interchangeable. Legend’s ‘Happy Birthday’ for his daughter is pretty disappointing with plain lyrics.

On the bright side, the production is brilliant, as is the use of instrumentation. The album doesn’t exceed expectations but it is exactly what you would expect judging by his previous tracks. The songwriting is average but at least it doesn’t delve into the ‘put you’re hands up’ and ‘jump’ level of a lot of other dance music. He tries to tell an emotional story but the lyrics don’t hit the mark. Kygo’s transition from a remix artist is going to take time but we see a lot of potential as it’s a great effort for a first album!

Our Favourites: Stay, Firestone, and Fragile.
