Afghanistan's First All-Girl Orchestra Overcame Death Threats To Perform

Posted at January 23rd, 2017 | by Shivani Goel | in

The 47th annual World Economic Forum in Davos saw a lot of interesting happenings and one of them was the representation of women’s rights by Zohra, Afghanistan’s all-female orchestra. These 30 young women were the first in their families to learn music and had to overcome a lot, including fundamentalistic death threats in their home country, to get to where they are today. They were joined by members of the youth orchestra of the Collège de Genève and they demonstrated a powerful cross-cultural dialogue through music. Watch the performance below, there is even a piece written especially for hope of a brighter future of Afghanistan.

The ensemble of women ranges from the ages of 14 to 20 and they are studying at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM). In a country where the Taliban had banned music and arts for an extended period, this was quite an achievement. The orchestra played works from Beethoven, classic Afghan music, and more, and it’s truly a breathtaking performance, breaking gender barriers for women in all third-world countries.
