India’s rocky terrain and diverse landscape is home to a variety of caves and structures that have wowed visitors from in and outside the country. Here’s a selection of some of the best.
  1. Ajanta and Ellora Caves:

Ajanta and Ellora are probably THE go-to destination for cave lovers in the country as its widespread fame is well-deserved because of the supreme skill of the architects who have worked on the rocks. Inevitably declared a World Heritage Site, the caves have sheltered denizens of multiple religions throughout history. Ajanta’s creation goes back to the 2nd to 6th century AD and houses Buddhist art while Ellora’s 34 caves stretch back to 6th and 11th centuries AD and feature imagery from Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

  1. Tabo Caves:

Nestled in the Spiti Valley are the Tabo Caves, which have been used by Buddhist meditators and monks since time immemorial. These dense structures have also been used as a shelter during harsh winters where the larger caves were used as assembly halls and smaller ones were dwellings. A lot of prayer flags are also found there, which signifies that the place is being used by practitioners.
