The Indian Independent music sphere has seen lots of artists, few of them being women instrumentalists, singer-songwriters and vocalists who have well established themselves in the music industry. Take a look at Top 12 Women who represent Indie Music in India.

Monica Dogra


Currently judging the reality music show ‘The Stage’, Monica Dogra is a renounced singer who rosed to fame with her Mumbai-based electronic duo Shaa’ir and Func.

Tipriti Kharbangar

Soulmate 10

Tipriti is part of the Shillong based band ‘Soulmate’ and is still considered as one of the most finest female singer coming from the North east. Her most memorable moment had to be her winning the Best Female Vocalist back in 2009 at the Jack Daniels Rock Awards.

Anushka Manchanda


The ex-Channel V, VJ and the singer of the pop band VIVA, Anushka is now a prominent solo artist having sung for movies like ABCD, ABCD 2, Dedh Ishqiya, Dum Maaro Dum and many many more.

Vasuda Sharma

At the age of 18, Vasuda rose to fame for being a part of the pop band, Aasma. Coming back after a year of studies, Vasuda said “People are opening up to indie music. Moneywise, hopefully, things will get better, but slowly, the platforms are growing and people are noticing new musicians.” Vasuda is also able to beatbox few harmonies and likes to make her own music live and sing her compositions over it.

Suman Sridhar


Suman is a singer-songwriter from Mumbai. Her associated act Sridhar/Thayil made waves in with their studio album in 2012. Rolling Stones also acclaimed the duo as “redefining indie music in India”. The duo is also known for “their cabaret-like attitude and improvisational chaos on stage.”

Kanchan Daniel


Kanchan is the lead singer of Kanchan Daniel and the Beards. The band plays everything from Blues-rock, Soul to Indie. “Violence that rips across the smooth serenade” is what the fans have to say about her voice.


Alisha Pais

Alisha Pais is a singer songwriter from Mumbai and not only is she just a singer she is also a music teacher for pre-school. Pais began writing poetry and song-lyrics when she was a kid. When asked about her songs she said “Each song is different, it’s not like I play one specific genre. I play a lot of different things. All I can say is that it is full of feel.

Shalini Mohan


Shalini is a Bassist/Vocalist from Bangalore. When asked about her influences she said “The Beatles have a very special significance to me because factually I started my music with them.”

Shazneen Arethna


Shazneen is Mumbai based vocalist who frequently collaborates with the local talents. She rose to fame after she gave voice to ‘I Hate You Like I Love You’ from the movie Delhi Belly.

Alisha Batth


Alisha is a singer-songwriter from Mumbai. She believes that her style of music is a mix of folksy-bluesy rock. She calls Ani DiFranco and Melissa Etheridge as her major influences.

Vasundhara Vidalur



Vasundhara Vidalur is one half of Adil & Vasundhara, a collaborative outfit based out of New Delhi. Vidalur sings in French & English and covers a spectrum of music ranging from Jazz Fusion to RnB to Gospel.

Sukhmani Malik



The famed member of Chandigarh Folktronica duo ‘Hari & Sukhmani’, Sukhmani is a trained classical vocalist who beautifully blends folk with contemporary electronic. She is fierce and inspiring.
