10 Things India must know about Apple Music streaming service

Once again the ‘settings’ icon on our iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch came to life, notifying us about the iOS 8.4 update. Considered as a game changer, the update is set to bring a wave of new features and the much awaited Apple Music to more than a 100 countries. Meanwhile, the tech giant also issued a revised version of iTunes in the form of 12.2 with Apple Music and Beats 1 support, which can now be downloaded both on Mac and Windows.

Below we’ve listed 10 things you must know about Apple Music and Beats 1 Radio as an Indian user:

  1. Apple Music fundamentally makes the complete iTunes store (30 million+ songs) available as a streaming service. Albeit the entire library won’t be available immediately at launch.

  3. Beats 1 Radio is free-to-air. All you need is an Internet connection and an iDevice. Although, offline listening, unlimited skips, and unlimited music playbacks are some of the other benefits exclusive to subscribers.

  5. Apple Music is free for the initial 3 months and after the trial period is over, it would cost INR 120 per month for an individual membership and INR 190 per month for a family of up to six users which requires iCloud Family Sharing to be enabled.

  7. The service will also work on your Windows PC but Android users will have to wait for a few months. It must also be noted, Android users will only get to use the paid subscription.

  9. Users from now on will be able to share their playlists with others over the web. The list will be updated automatically after an alteration is made by the original creator. Apart from that, Apple has recruited some fanciful experts to set curated

  11. A social network for musicians named as ‘Connect’ was also launched, enabling to reach their fans with new music much more easily. However, “Play and save Connect content” is a paid feature.

  13. Siri can also help you find music now! For example, you can now tell Siri to “Play me latest Bollywood songs” or ask “What’s the best Honey Singh song?”

  15. The music will be streamed at a rate of 256kbps. While some of us might notice a slight deterioration in quality when compared to 320 kbps, it’s not something to be bothered about. On the brighter side this will consume lesser amount of data.

  17. The “For You” section displays recommended music that you might like based on preferences you’ve entered and past music you’ve listened to, and a “New” section that offers just-out and trending music.

  19. With a fresh multicoloured icon, there’s also a new Ratings option in the iOS music app. You can now use the traditional star ratings along with the new “Loves”.

In terms of features, Apple music doesn’t actually offer something out of the box or different from already available apps like Wynk and Gaana. Although, Apple has an upper hand with its mammoth music collection, Siri integration and the fact that iOS users don’t need to install a third party application.
