10 Indie-Artist Covers of your favorite songs

Posted at August 19th, 2015 | by Kamakshi Bhat | in

This is once in a blue moon thing. But when it does happen (did I mention rarely?), it is amazing and out of this world. Indie artists doing pop better than pop artists, indie artist doing everything better than every artists!

So, here’s a list of Indie artists taking over the music world by covering their fellow musicians (Do I dare say, better than them?). Well, decide for yourself!

1. Angus and Julia Stone- Chandelier (Sia)

Okay, so you have to admit that this is a difficult song to cover. But Julia Stone’s effortless singing in her beautiful unique voice and their own low key rendition to this amazing song is worth a lot of views.

2. Laura Welsh – Bound (Kanye West)

A soulful rendition to this wonderful song by the upcoming electro-indie singer-songwriter is way too amazing to be not on ANY covers list.

3. Bastille- We Can’t Stop(Miley Cyrus)

No one could see this coming. But this actually happened and that too in such a great way that we were taken by a storm. A more serious cover with less beats and more harmonizing makes it all the more irresistible to not hear. And we can officially not stop listening to this now.

4. Hozier- Problem (Ariana Grande)

At first you go like “How is this even possible?” But once you listen to this song, you will get around the fact that Hozier is one of a kind and without this cover our world would have no meaning. The whole version is constructed around a guitar sound with Hozier’s amazing haunting vocals. WOW.

5. The 1975- What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction)

A stripped down version, with their signature sound to it, making it sound more like high school rather than One Direction’ middle school version and Matty Healy’s breathy vocals adding the perfect edge to it that it needs.

6. Ellie Goulding- Only Girl(Rihanna)

Covering Rihanna is one hell of a job and Ellie Goulding not only does that she does it wonderfully. The focus is very violin oriented and the end is on a great note.

7. Florence And The Machine- Addicted to Love (Robert Palmer)

This song by Robert Palmer released in 1986 became quite the sensation back in the day. Naturally, there are a lot of artists covering it over the years, but my favorite has to be this one by Florence and the Machine.

8. Lorde- Don’t Tell Em (Jeremih)

Quite the talented young newbie, her fresh take on this number is amazing and her breathtaking vocals are out of this world. It is soulful and beautiful!

9. The Neighbourhood- Say My Name/Cry Me A River (Destiny Child, Justin Timberlake)

This Might be the most popular mainstream mashup cover yet. And this band kicks it out of the roof by this out of the world version. If you haven’t heard this one, you are seriously missing out.

10. Gabrielle Aplin and Bastille- Dreams (Fleetwood Mac)

Dreamy, beautiful, amazing, wonderful, surprising, no number of adjectives could do this justice! Take a look for yourself!
