10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About The Arctic Monkeys

Posted at July 13th, 2015 | by Kamakshi Bhat | in Entertainment, Indie

With their 2013 album ‘AM’ bringing them the commercial success they needed, Arctic Monkeys are now one of the most buzzed about indie rock bands around, but how much do you really know about the “Why’d you only call me when you’re high?” hitmakers?

The only question is, Do You Wanna Know? (Yes, pun intended)

1. When the band first started, they made numerous stories as to why they decided to name themselves Arctic Monkeys, when, in reality, guitarist Jamie Cook just always wanted to be in a band with that name (Alex Turner claims that even James Cook does not know where the name came from).

2. They were one of the first bands to make it big via MySpace. Fans shared their music, which eventually led to a huge following before they even signed with a record label.

3. Their hit song “R U Mine?” was inspired by Lil Wayne and Drake.

4. They seriously considered to name their second album ‘Lesbian Wednesdays, Gordon Brown and Gary Barlow’.

5. Matt Helders, the band’s drummer took up drumming because everyone else had already picked up an instrument.

6. Matt Helders is also a DJ and a producer. He has remixed the likes of The Hives, Duran Duran, and even featured on Toddla T’s Skanky Skank album.

7. All four members grew up together in High Green, a northern suburb of Sheffield. They have known each other since they were seven years old.

8. The song that made them famous in the UK was the song “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance floor”.

9. Jamie Cook used to work as a tiler back in 2006 and even went back to complete his job after a sold out tour.

10. Nick O’Malley learnt the bass parts to the entire Arctic Monkeys debut album within two days.
