10 DJs With Impressive Academic Degrees

Posted at October 30th, 2015 | by Sidhantha Jain | in Grapevine

Today’s top tier of the EDM world aren’t graduates only in the field of party rocking, they’ve also achieved a lot in the field of academics as well! Take a moment and look at some of the brightest minds in the dance music world:

  1. Henry Fong

One half behind ‘Bust Dem,’ Henry Fong is a multilevel genius! Not only, he knows how to turn a small party into a f-rave, he also knows a lot about marketing, law and mass communication, thanks to his degrees in Bachelor of Science in Marketing, Communications, and Criminal Justice from University of Central Florida! He completed his education in 2010.

  1. Claude Von Stroke

Barclay Macbride Crenshaw better known by his stage name Claude VonStroke, initially had a thing for hip-hop music but then embraced emerging electronic music and soon started producing house and techno music. The Dirtybird and Mothership head attended the University of Rochester in New York, gaining a degree in Film, Cinema and Video Studies. He has worked in Hollywood as an assistant on films like The Truman Show while in school.

  1. Elephante

Apparently both Bill Gates and Elephante went to the prestigious Harvard University.  However, the latter started producing music and has been touring around the world with sold out shows ever since he acquired his degree in 2011.  Surprisingly, he wasn’t even serious for EDM, it was just a way of killing time!  When asked, how Harvard affected his career choice, he replied, “It made my parents like 10x more pissed. Actually though, it mostly just showed me the life I didn’t want, and that all the money/opportunities in the world would be pointless if I wasn’t happy.”

  1. Steve Aoki

Born in Miami, Aoki graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 1995 and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and receiving 2 Bachelor of Arts degrees in Feminist Studies and Sociology! I don’t know from where he learnt how to do perfect champagne showers and throw cakes at random people,  for that matter,  I guess we’ll have to consult the guru himself!

  1. Moby

Richard Melville Hall aka Moby is a man of a good heart and many talents. He’s an animal rights activist, professional photographer, singer, songwriter and beyond all that, a world famous dance music producer and DJ! Furthermore, the “Voodoo Child” has a formal Philosophy degree to his name. Hmmm…  Interesting, philosophy majors are making more money than MBAs.

  1. NERVO

Mim and Liv don’t just happen to be skillful, renowned and important in the dance music community. The Australian twins are musicians first; models, songwriters and Genazzano FCJ College  pass-outs next! The two were signed with Sony/ATV Music Publishing at 18 years of age and began their careers as models with the Australian Chadwick Models Agency.

  1. Andrew Bayer

Andrew Bayer hails from Washington DC and is mostly recognized ‘cause of his unique progressive house tunes on   Anjunabeats. Apart from being a world class pianist and electronic music producer, the ‘Counting the points’ hit maker went to Berklee College of Music for three years where he polished his music production.

  1. Jessica Philippe

I guess one should follow her heart to find eternal happiness. Maybe that’s the reason J. Phlip gave up on her career as an engineer after attaining Systems Engineering degree from the University of Illinois to work full time as a DJ / Producer and a potential festival headliner!

  1. Armin Van Buuren

The five time DJ Magazine’s No. 1 DJ, Buuren graduated from the Stedelijk Gymnasium Leiden in 1995, and studied law at Leiden University as a backup option during his early DJ-ing stage. The ‘Embrace’ producer used to play for as many as six hours in ‘Club Next,’ during his days at the university. As his music gained popularity, he put the degree on hold and continued to pursue his career as trance producer but in 2003, he returned to the law school to complete his studies.

  1. Kode9

Steve Goodman or Kode9 is one of the major Dubstep players other than Skirllex who’ve promoted the genre ever since its inception. The Hyperdub boss collected his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Warwick, and now teaches lectures on music culture and technology at the University of East London! More to add, he also wrote a book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear!

I never knew my favorite producers are THAT intelligent!  You’ve got some more? Share with us in the comments section and keep stalking our page!
