10 Clichéd Songs That Every Band 'Thinks' They Can Perform

Posted at December 30th, 2015 | by Nikhil George | in

Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana and singer of Foo Fighters, once said, ‘Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old fucking drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll fucking start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives’ To all you aspiring rock stars out there, take Grohl’s advice by all means but do make sure that you don’t get stuck playing covers of other sounds. And even if you decide to start off by playing cover songs, here are 10 tracks that have been covered so often that it’s probably best to leave them alone…

Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Although this insanely catchy song that won Green Day a Grammy for Record of the Year way back in 2006 might seem like an easy song to cover, maybe you ought to realize that Billie Joe Armstrong’s drawling vocals are simply one of a kind.

Smoke on the Water

This song’s riff by Ritchie Blackmore is probably one of the first that every aspiring guitarist (including me) learns to play which gives you enough reason to give this song a wide berth. If you are hell-bent on covering Deep Purple, they have tons of other good tracks too.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

This was the song that brought alternative rock into the mainstream all the way back in 1992. The guitar riff is easy enough, having just four power chords. But do not, not even for a moment, think you can ever convey all the pain and angst that Cobain managed to convey through this song.

Enter Sandman

Just because this happens to one of Metallica’s most popular tracks doesn’t give you enough reason to cover this song over and over again…

Sweet Child O’ Mine

Although you’ve probably heard this played way too much, you’ve got to admit that this solo is one of the best ever! Axl Rose’s crooning just about manages to hit the spot too…

Stairway to Heaven

This song is sacred. Please do not desecrate this song by attempting to cover it…

Chester Bennington is probably thinking of changing the chorus to, “I’ve become so numb that I don’t wanna hear this anymore.”

According to the songwriter Noel Gallagher, this song describes an imaginary friend who’s going to come and save your from yourself. Especially if you choose to cover this song.

Let’s make a deal… You can cover this song if you can top Ozzy’s bat-eating antics onstage!

Comfortably Numb

I get the feels every time I listen to this song… I plan on keeping it that way… So please refrain from covering this song ever again!!
