One of the most well known comedians in the country, Vir Das, has been making leaps and bounds for the Indian comedic community. He already performs at some of the biggest venues and events across the country and now he’s made a solid international mark as well. His collaboration with Netflix, Abroad Understanding, was out on the 25th of April and is a tremendous feat for an Indian comedian. Yes, other personalities like Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, and Russell Peters also have international fame as Indian Comedians, but Vir Das is a true blue, born and bred Indian guy.
He filmed the special in two parts, with the video cutting back and forth between a comedy club in New York and the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. “It is an opportunity of a lifetime. Netflix is immediately giving us a big, scale-able platform and we are piggybacking on their credibility,” Vir told Mashable. “Indian comedy has never had as big an audience. An authentically Indian comedy has never reached the world. We’ve always been looking at India in terms of funny accents and habits and so on. We have always been a punchline and not a perspective. Until now we’ve had Americans making fun of Indians in America. Now, we’ll have an Indian making fun of Americans in America. And they’ll laugh.”
Although there are some unavoidable clichéd jokes, which are so assuredly funny that he couldn’t help but use them, like Indians eating and the cinema displaying physical intimacy in comical ways, he still got a lot of stuff on point. Das touched upon a number of relevant topics from politics to racism, with intelligence, sensitivity, and calculated humour, and was unapologetic about his opinions.
He’ll have you laugh, empathize, and agree with his views, wrapping up on a touching note. Even though you’re watching on a screen, it feels like the end of something special, and he keeps you captivated throughout. Vir Das totally won with ‘Abroad Understanding’ and if you haven’t seen it already, you must!
